New truck, free dealer maintenance…

NOTHING is free. You're paying for those oil changes in the purchase price of the truck, so I sure as heck wouldn't let them go to waste. Throwing those oil changes away and then spending even more money on a full synthetic oil would be a huge waste. There's absolutely nothing wrong with the dexos blend, and running a full synthetic instead isn't going to magically extend the life of your engine if you're changing it when the OLM tells you to.

How about I do one and one, I do my own with pennzoil dexos, gold, blend, blah blah blah, at every 4k leave the OLM as is (dont reset it) and take it for the "free oil change" when the OLM finally goes off.

The only thing I really see myself benefiting from is the tire rotations, although I like rotating mine every 6k, the om recommends every 7.5k miles, wonder if they'll give me the run around with that as well?

I work at a dealer. I bought my wife a 2013 Crew Cab Texas Edition Silverado to replace her 2001 when the rebate jumped way up this month to reduce the stock to make room for the 2014s.

They are basically giving you the first four oil changes and tire rotations. It is basically a good will GM is offering on the 2013s to make them more attractive at model end and keep them competitive with other manufactures’ marketing. I will take hers in every six thousand miles to make sure I get the most out of the freebies. Dexos is fine oil. Once the freebies are exhausted I will resume doing my own oil changes with Mobil1 EP. She drives a lot and will likely be over the 24K miles before the two years are up.

We are not really “free” to use whatever bulk oil we want. I will attempt to explain concisely. Dealers love warranty work. It makes the dealer a lot of money and the manufacture is the only customer that always pays their repair bills. It may not always be convenient work as it pays less than retail with set prices for labor and parts. It makes the dealer a lot of money all the same. To be eligible to be a certified service center and perform warranty work certain requirements must be met and maintained. One of those (many) requirements is using the oil that meets Dexos. We don’t even bulk the non-Dexos any longer. It is cheaper to just bulk the Dexos and keep the oil change retail price the same. This keeps us price competitive with quickie lubes and keeps us warranty compliant on all models since Dexos superseded the previous oil requirements except where Mobil1 is suggested. So, while a dealer is technically free to use whatever oil they want, most dealers would conclude that the few cents a quart saved bulking non-dexos compliant oil is not worth the risk of losing thousands in warranty work or even a francise. If they tell you they are using Dexos it is a safe bet they are.

Here is a link to the customer acknowledgment form. It states in the small print that oil type provided will be in accordance with manufacturer recommendations…

You might also consider doing a LOF change in-between each dealer service and let them reset the OLM.
