Hi Guys and Gals great site have been here quite a few times. but never joined. But just had too its such a great wealth of information.

Well to get down to it My Hyundai elantra is going to need a oil change soon, I had it changed by the dealer once after 3 mnths. of having it. they charged me 43.00 to do it.
hey is it normal for them to charge $.80 cents to put oil on the filter before installation?
Anyways I am going to do it myself and use a oem filter. Question is what kind of oil.

The wife drives it and has a little heavy foot and only drives maybe 1 mile to work and back. It has low mileage not even 6000 km. I like to change the oil around every 3 mths or sooner if high mileage happens

what suggestions does everyone have.

Thanks Caveanimal

ANY 5w-20 oil changed to whatever the severe service schedule. (I think your engine does call for 5w-20)

It will not matter at all what type of oil you use. Changing it will matter.

I like Quaker state, Valvoline, Pennzoil, Mobil 5000 (or whatever they are calling it this week) and so on. Just make sure it has the API SM/SN approval.

Its that simple!

Take care and

My wife and I are retired and own/have owned 5 KIA/Hyundai vehicles.

We often make short trips of about a mile to the grocery, etc. About once a week we often drive about 16 miles from town for lunch at a Mom & Pop place.

Living a few miles from the Florida line we see long hot Summers and some freezing night during Winter.

We run 5W20 Synthetic year around and go by the severe driving recommendations in the owners manual.

As far as brands it would just depend on what is available in Canada where you live and the price would be a factor too.

They are charging the $.80 for the new drain plug gasket that Hyundai requires to be replaced every oil service.
Change oil every 6 months if you are not hitting 6000km in that time frame. Do not exceed the maximum service interval by time or milage.
Hyundai oil filters are warranted for 6 months/7500 miles inn the US.

If you are going to do relatively short intervals on dino, Quaker State Conventional is a great choice. It's a cheap quality oil, and it's boron heavy add pack does a good job of quieting down the sometimes noisy Hyundai/KIA engines. Pennzoil conventional would also be a good choice but it is quite a bit more than Quaker State.

I have our KIA on longer intervals with full synthetic due to cost, it's actually cheaper, not due to the oil it's the filters that get you cost wise.

Synthetic:
Pennzoil Platinum or Quaker State Ultimate Durability in 0w-20 preferably. But 5w-20 will be fine.

Synthetic Blend:
Castrol GTX Syn-Blend 5w-20
Pennzoil Gold 5w-20

Conventional:
Castrol GTX 5w-20
Mobil Super 5w-20

Thanks for the input. much appreciated

I use Pennzoil in my dodge van which also has low mileage. just over 30000 km 2009. the last time I changed it. It wasn't very dirty at all but it was about 4 months since I changed it. should I go to synthetic oil for it or stay with what I have been using?

Again thanks for the input All

Mandatory interval is 4 months, 6,000 kms in Canada. Hyundai has a supplementary manual for Canada vehicles that specifies the severe schedule. I am looking at the deal at Walmart this week, 4.73L Valvoline 5w20 conventional for $12.88 for my 2013 Sonata GLS 2.4L.
What's the BITOG inside story on Valvoline conventional suitability for DI engines?

Valvoline conventional is a great choice for DI engines, check the used oil analysis section. It resists the negative effects of fuel dilution very well and it's cheap to boot!
