2013 CR-V or 2014 Escape?

They made the new CRVs ugly again. I've always preferred a Rav4's looks, but in this segment a CX5 would be my choice (I can live with a 'noisy' new car easily, as I always drive cheap, older cars). Although a Forester would warrant a test drive also - I wouldn't choose it personally as I'd want MTX and that suffers a significant MPG loss for Subarus currently.

CX5 2.5L Touring seems to be the one to get.

Being a DIY-er it would be a turn off for me.

CX-5 looks like it has a bit more room

CR-V looks like it's about the same or a bit more room as CX-5.

I like the look of an engine bay without the plastic cover.

We couldn't be happier with our CR-V. Honda took some of the handling "edge" out of the 2012+ models, but they still drive pretty nice, and would be a good match for a 100 mile commute. I really like Honda's philosophy of low cost and low effort to own. Maintenance is stupid easy. The transmission still comes with a real dipstick to check fluid levels. All fluid reservoirs have easy-to-access drain plugs and fill plugs (if not using the dipstick). It's very easy to drive and very enjoyable to live with. I tow with ours every week. Lifetime fuel economy is around 24 mpg.

Best vehicle I've ever owned.

My wife and I are really liking our '13 CR-V. I went with the Honda because it doesn't have DI or a CVT.

I drove a CX-5 and wasn't as excited about it as most of BITOG seems to be.

You're not the only one. Sales are dismal. First four months of 2013, 98000 CRV's sold, only 24000 CX-5's. Look for Mazda and Mitsubishi to go the way of Suzuki & Daewoo relatively soon.

Not happening. Mazda has limited numbers of dealerships and production. They are selling what they produce and not at a loss. Sales numbers for Mazda will never be comparable to Honda, Toyota, Ford, etc. and they don't have to be for Mazda. Mazda is profitable in the USA.

Looked at both these vehicles this weekend. Both are out of contention now. The Escape seemed cheap and not worth anywhere near the $$ they want for it.

I'm not sure who the design genius of the CRV but putting a foot brake right above my left shin? I see that thing carving my leg in an in an accident. Not to mention awkward placement. I also don't like how they have exposed the condenser in the front. All ready to catch debris and blamo...there that goes

I have never test drive so many vehicles prior to purchacing as I have on the last 3 vehicles. Even the used vehicles that I've purchaced. I seem to come away with some surprises.

Our intent is to go with the best looking or most reliable vehicle in a catigory. And have often ended up with the surprise vehicle. EXAMPLE:

Although 9 years ago, I went to our local International Auto Show at he Rochester Convention Center, where onlookers can climb into all the vehicles, open all doors/turnk/hatch, move seats(without the test drive). We originaly went looking "AGAIN" for another Camry or Accord. We ended up liking the Sonata and Altima(niether of which I have owned).

Next was the test drive at our local dealerships. All were nice in the own way but, we ended up with the Altima for many comfort and outward view power/handling reasons over our normal favorites(Cam/Cord's)

Again, not long ago, while looking for a used car for our duaghter, we ended up with the Mazda3 instead of the Civic/Corolla in which we've also owned in the distant past.

It really pays to...not only shop around for price but, specific likes/criteria in one vehicle compared to our normal choices. The choices that many folks would call, "their safe choices" and the vehicles that many choose(with good success) but, without testing other vehicles(Civ/Olla).

Man, IDK what vehicle I'd buy today as there are so many good choices!

1) Remove the pedal, shorten it considerably, re-install.
2) Use some form of brush guard, and screen.

Those are not deal breakers in my mind. As long as the rest of the vehicle is OK.

I've been looking at the CX-5 and the Escape and have pretty much determined that the CX-5 is going to be my next vehicle. The CX-5 is a beautiful car, inside and out, and the 2.5L is a satisfying ride. It handles beautifully and the 6-speed auto was a dream. The blindspot alert system is also much better in the CX-5, imo.

It was noisier than the Escape 2.0L, but Ford has been putting very nice SoundScreen windshields in their new models - I think this is the main difference.

My only hesitation with Ford is the small turbo engines seem to be the norm now. I know that's where the industry is heading, but I'll let others take those steps before me. I would probally go Honda personally.

Small turbos have been around for years. Both diesel and gas. I don't know how so many have been playing ostrich for so long.

What a great problem! It's a good time to be shopping, cars are better than ever.

My only advice would be to narrow it down a bit and then consider renting a car you may buy for a week or so. No 10 minute test drives.

My local Chevrolet dealer gave me a truck for a weekend to try out. I need an extended drive to tell if it's really for me.

Fortunately, the plastic covers are removable.

The new Forester and the CX-5 have piqued my interest a bit. The new Mazda3 hatch may warrant a look as well whenever it decides to hit the dealerships. Yes I am in a good position where I don't need to sell my truck so I'm in no huge rush.

Just be careful - on a lot of DI engines, the covers have sounde deadening material to quite the clatter of the injectors and fuel pump. On my Ecoboost the cover has material and there is additional material around the high pressure pump and even some stuck in the valley in the intake manifold gaps.

The DI engines can be surprisingly loud! We had a 3.6 DI from GM and it was quiet as a mouse, but the noise was absorbed by the engine cover.
