I made this post years ago. When Mobil 1 Annual Protection went away I switched back to Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 and have ran it ever since at 10k change intervals. The truck now has 235,000 miles on it and runs like a top with no oil usage and no appreciable depoits under the valve cover. The only parts its required is a blower motor, new upper and lower ball joints, a set of wheel bearings, tie rod ends and a front pads and rotors. The front end parts where done a week ago. Ive beat on this truck in ways most urbanites cant fathom and it rides and runs like new.
I did do a subsequant UOA years ago after and all the numbers looked great at 10k OCI. However, the amount of dirt road driving went way down as I changed jobs.

I've driven my cousin's '09 4.0 and was impressed by the engine. We've been changing his oil with OE filters and whatever oil (MaxLife, PP, and Valvoline Synthetic, I think) on 5k intervals for the year he's had it. It's an easy oil change, with the filter up top. It's got plenty of power, quite thirsty though (unsurprisingly) - the fuel tank isn't big enough for that engine on the highway, in my opinion.

Yes its a thirsty engine and yes the fuel tank is too small.

I had an 06 taco 4.0l. I ran castrol syntec blend and castrol high mileage and the orange can of death for 365,000 miles before trading in .......6 sp manual loved that truck

At this point im 175,000 miles over. Not sure its a good idea to change it now.
Yesterday is too late. I would change it today. Do it before it gets much colder. You might do a drain and fill and run for a bit and just do it again, unless you want to drain the engine block too. You could also pull the thermostat and get a bunch more out that way. That coolant is going to be pretty scuzzy.
