What does everyone think about the 2012 Subaru Impreza? It's got lower hp and torque but much better mpg. Can't wait to see specs for the WRX and STI but that might be another year out before they officially announce.

Is it still as ugly as before?

I like the price/performance/features of the subarus, looks...I'm not too picky.

I'm really torn between the impreza or wrx with manual transmission, doesn't matter if its the 4 door or 5...I would like the sti but it's just too much of a price and insurance jump. Plus it's at least another year or two before I buy but I'm starting to research.

I dunno.
Mercedes apparently thought that the Forester, which is an Impreza, looked good enough that they emulated it in the GLK.
As Robert Cumberford wrote of the GLK "Resembles the Subaru Forester. Not a compliment".

The new Impreza may give all of the AWD advantages for which Subarus are justly famous without the downside of poor fuel economy.
NA Subarus have never been quick cars, but they will get on down the road just fine.
You don't buy any Subaru for its looks, and you don't buy any NA Subaru for its speed.
You buy it for its functional advantages, and for the priviledge of laughing at SUV drivers in the ditches in really foul winter weather.

Your post highlighted in red SO TRUE!

Subaru does KNOW how to make an AWD system. Better than everyone in my book and only Audi comes VERY close. Everyone else is behind.

I'd have looked hard at one. AWD is a very nice feature to have for the winters here. The MPG's aren't awful, either!

My mom loves her old Legacy wagon. It's not fast, it's not that fuel efficient, and it'll scamper up the icy hill she lives on like nobody's business on junky all-seasons. The lake-effect snows I've driven it through it just went with no drama. It's also been fairly reliable, if a bit expensive to fix when it does need work.

If you google "2012 impreza forum" and click on the first link... there is a (currently) 121 page thread on it. I've been following and it's pretty comprehensive. After researching a few months now on a possible new car...I find this to be the best value for price, functionality, mpg, and reliability. There is some mumble about reliability on a first year "new generation" Subarus so YMMV. 36MPG and two bikes in the back with the seats folded without removing the wheels, fantastic. Oh yeah, did I mention 36mpg for awd?! The only thing it doesn't have that I need is projector headlights. It does however have HID on the higher models. If I absolutely have to buy one soon, I'll have the headlights retrofiitted with probably TSX projectors but a true retrofit costs a bundle. My '10 Sequoia retrofit with S2000 projectors with OE Lexus ballasts, D2S bulbs and labor was near 1500. I'm hoping 2013 will have projector headlights...it would be a no brainer then. If you join one of the supporting societies (min. membership for at least 6 months before being eligible) you get VIP pricing, which is 2% below invoice. However, it seems like people have gotten 1.5% below invoice without being a member. This is the most anticipated vehicle for me anyway...the genesis 5.0 R-spec was a huge let down...I was hoping for near 5 series handling...what was I smokin.

Hopefully they improved the stereo systems available. The current Subaru Impreza and Outback have the wimpiest stereos I've ever heard- at least as bad as the cavaliers stock tape deck.

I think you have that part backwards, Bill, but I guess I'll let it slide. The only real thing that has prevented me from buying a Subaru is the absolutely atrocious, despicable reputation of the local Subaru dealer, which makes our inept local VW/Audi dealership look like a model of efficiency and high technical knowledge.

The dealership in question has enough court convictions in the public record that one doesn't even have to make unsubstantiated accusations.

The technology and post-sales dealer service are two different things. Yet it's true that you may be stuck with both when purchasing a new car.

When it comes to AWD, I tend to agree that Subaru has it figured out. That they may not know how to fix it if it breaks is a different story. But is the AWD system on Subaru prone to frequent failures? I thought it was fairly reliable.

I'm just being Audi-snobbish.

Don't get me wrong, I think Subarus are great cars and would love to try one. I just don't trust the local dealership enough to buy a quart of oil from them, let alone a car that would require their service if a warranty issue arose. They've been nailed for everything from rolling back odometers to the old switcheroo with total loss vehicles, and these were not isolated incidents. How they are able to hang onto the licence for the dealership, both from the province and Subaru, I'll never know.

We're big enough here to have two Ford, two Chrysler, and several GM dealerships, but for everything else, we get stuck with one, and some of my favourite makes have terrible, terrible dealers, with Subaru being saddled with the worst. It's a real pity, since a Subaru could be pretty nice in the winter.

Hmm, my only recollections of them is that they rust. Dad's '04 Forrester with automatic was (is) hard on gas, something like 25mpg highway.

I don't get the whole headlight thing, but to each their own I guess. If they both shine, that's good enough for me. Don't get me wrong, I love my adaptive HIDs on the Lincoln, but my next car doesn't HAVE to have them.
