I have a 2012 Silverado with the V6 - 4 speed trans. Does anyone know how I can tell the Trans type? Even the dealership does not know. Is it a 4L60E or 4L65E?

Also I am reading a lot of failures of the sungear? Should I be concerned?
Has this been fixed in the later models? Any preventative maintenance I can do now?

thanks

I have a hard time believing the dealer could not look it up by VIN. Maybe he did not feel like it. He may not know how to tell by just looking at it however.

I got a printout from the Chrysler dealer called the STAR report. It lists everything that the factory needed to know to build the vehicle. GMC must have a similar printout.

There's a HUGE amount of info out there on the 4L60/65/70e and alot of people seem overly afraid of these transmissions "grenading" and there's proof during teardown that earlier designs were bean counter driven, surely.
I believe that with the addition of the 5-pinion planetary gear (65e) and the HD (beast)reaction shell, upgrades to the 2/4 band, the newer versions have some better internals. What I don't like is the newer style PWM and the progressive TCC function though the problems with those early trys' were improper TC clutch material choice, paper,I believe. There alot I've left out for lack of recall.
Overheating and generally poor maintenance are by far the most likely causes of problems true with ANY automatic..new or old.The 4l60e in the work van has 211k with only routine maint.(knock on wood) and it is starting to flare a bit 2-3 but its done this for years.I just ease off accordingly. It owes me nothing at this point.

Some may hate on the 4l60 but there are millions with zero problems. Regular maint and maybe an added cooler.Try not to abuse it and don't sweat it.

In my circle of friends and family, there are probably 20 of them running a truck/SUV with a 4L60E. I've personally owned 3 of them.

Most of them are actually used as intended, towing boats, travel trailers, etc. None of them have experienced a failure.

If they're maintained and not abused, the 4L60E will last a long time.

The V6 gets the 4L60E.

You have most of the so-called 'updates' already. With care this is a 200k mile trans. We ran many many of these for years in Silverados and never had many issues at all. The only one I ever had that was bad was in an Impala SS and broke at the strip.

30k mile fluid changes with a filter every other will run that thing till you get tired of it!
