My in-laws gave my son their 2012 Nissan Rogue AWD. It is very clean inside. It has transmission issues (CVT). It will go when it oils cold but when it gets hot it doesn’t want to go. I heard that there’s a small filter in these somewhere that gets clogged. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this and if so, where is the filter located?

You can change the fluid and see if that helps, but if it's already on its way out it might be too late 
Worse than that the usual fix is to replace the transmission with a new/rebuilt one from Nissan. And "they knows how to charge".

I'd start with a simple drain and fill to see if the condition improves.

You can attempt the cooler filter and a fluid change drain and refill probably need somewhere around 6-7 Qts total. I would do two drain and refills. Watch YouTube videos on the procedure will most likely have to get the vehicle to operating temperature or just got for a good ride. Measure what you drain and refill drive 100+ miles and repeat. One of three possibilities come to mind fluid has loss its viscosity as it heats up becomes thinner that's why you're experiencing issues when the transmission is up to temperature causing the cvt internals to not function as intended, second belt is stretched and with heat it expands more, third is the valve body. “Doesn’t go when fluid gets hot”. That sounds like an overfill at best, or a bad trans at worst. A 2012 would/should have a dipstick. If the fluid is anywhere over full when hot, that’s a definite no no! I’d check it and if it’s over filled, then I’d drain and under fill by a half qt from what came out and see what happens and work up from there, if it improves.
I’ve got my 09 fluid set perfectly and a volume out, volume in, is as easy as can be. When piping hot my fluid level is just under the full mark. Even 8 ounces overfilled is a ticking bomb in these things.
Just run to Walmart and grab 4 qts of valvoline cvt fluid. If it’s still shot, then it’s shot. You can watch some videos for some “maybe “ fixes and hopefully get lucky.

If there full of metal particles your done. If not you could clean things up and try replacing the fluid with the proper type, and see if that helps.

my local shop swapped on in less than a day on a customers Altima and that was his 1st time trying. The labor isn’t bad, but you’ll have to have a Nissan dealer use consult to program the TCM. I bought one for my 18 Rogue from a yard (just in case) with 11k on it. I paid $1700 and it came with the tcm. It’s still setting on a pallet and at 95k, I haven’t needed it.
Changing fluid in these things is super simple and really needs to be done every 20-30k. The new 24s have been programmed to run hotter, believe it or not. Apparently Nissan has come to the conclusion that not burning off condensation was an issue with earlier cvts? DEBATEABLE!

I'm in a Nissan CVT. One of the keys to maintaining these is to have your fluids drained every 40k.
The newer CVTs are a bit different -- they are essentially a 2 speed transmission.
Nissan has improved these since the mid 2010's. The latter 2010's seem to be just fine...if you take care of them.
Edit: 6 cylinder models have usually had better luck, across the lineup.

Trans fluid pressures can be lower once they warm up. Fluid change, filter change, and a perhaps a full quart of Lucas might get 6 months? Besides the transmissions, the rogue seems to be a really nice car. For the price paid, a rebuilt unit with a warranty would be nice entry into a nice car.
