Im new hear and I see a lot of discussion on the new di engines. I live in upstate ny and the car does see a lot of short trips with some highway miles. Ive always used qsud or edge 5w30 and pur1 filters for the most part.Ive always did the oci at 3,750 miles like the book says for severe operation. Its not the turbo di engine but whenever I changed the oil it did smell like fuel. The oil looked clean always but seemed like it did shear a lot. Now I know without doing a uoa I really wouldn't know for sure. I just changed the oil last week and used qsud5w30 and a fram ultra filter. Should I keep the same oci and maybe leave the ultra on there for one more run. Im kinda nervous about not changing the filter everytime because the engine only hold 3 and half qts of oil. And I know theres gotta be atleast a half a qt of oil left in the filter and base. Everyone says the ultra is good for 15,000 miles. The cars got 34,000 miles on it now and runs great.

If it were my vehicle would change the oil and filter as recommended by the owners manual and use the weight recommended.

Wife have Two non-turbo KIA/Hyundai vehicles and use 5W20 QSUD oil and change the oil and filter around the 3,750 mile point too as we make many very short trips often a mile or so.

Hyundai/KIA oil filters are of high quality and are recommended for use by many owners.

I understand that with DI Engines especially with short trips that fuel can end up in the oil.

The oil fill cap on both of our vehicles is marked 5W20.

Would not do anything that would void the warranty.

Follow the Owners Manual. You cant go wrong with QSUD or even QSGB at 3700 mi.
I also use Purolator filters (classic and P1) at times on the SFS 2.0T, zero issues. When I had the Veloster, same engine, I went with the QSGB/3700 miles schedule.

I work for a dealership service department in Upstate NY, and I can tell you with confidence that our bulk oil (Gulfpride AFE semi-synthetic 5w30) is sufficient for 3750 miles with an OEM filter (best choice for the car). Don't run extended intervals. Fuel dilution is notable in all of the Hyundai GDI motors.
So far, we have yet to see any engine issues with the 1.6 GDI. I have not had to perform any internal engine repairs, nor have I had to install a long or short block in a Veloster or Accent with this motor.

Thanks for the info. Yeah because of the fuel smell I didn't plan on going any further with the oil. I Have run Hyundai oil filters before but I never heard any ticking with the pur1 or ultra filters so I assume its all good. I guess some hyundais have a start up ticking sound but I never heard it. I also run 5w30 in mine because the manual says I can with no warrnanty issues to speak of. Im not a big fan of the new 5w20 oils just yet. I guess im alittle old school.

Also my dealer told me to change the oil at 4000 miles and all is good but I still do it every 3,750 . Im anal about it . My brother laughs at me all the time and says he will take my used oil and put it in his cars and trucks. I think he changes his oils every 3 or 4 years maybe. I gotta say hes never blown an engine. My dads the same way, he will go 30,000 miles over and oci and say if you wanna change it for me go ahead but your wasting your time. Sometimes I don't know what to believe. My cousins van has over 400.000 miles on it, pyb the whole time and that van runs great.

Im sure none of those motors is a 'revolutionary, highly advanced, taken from the blueprints of the latest UFO's, d.i.' design.

+1

^lol. Some person on hear has said that because of the fuel dilution issues with the di engines that they would also run 5w30 like I do because of the sheering that's taking place. Im not against running 5w20 but to me if the 5w30 is shearing down then wouldn't the 5w20 even sheer down further.

Im surely not the expert here but a few bitogers have stated that fuel dilution may not necessarily mean out-of-norm wear if manufacturer oci recommendations are followed.
