2012 Sonata 2.4 GDI engine, 74k miles. I always use the OEM filter on this car. Due to the GDI and fuel dilution, would Castrol Euro 0W40 or M1 HM 10W30 be better in this engine?

Do you actually have UOA results that indicate that you have a fuel solution issue?

Since the 0w-40 iirc is on the lighter end, and the 10w-30 is an ACEA A3 on the heavier end, I think you’re splitting hairs.

Question isn’t if one is best for your climate.

+1, don't just assume you have fuel dilution. Mine does not.

OEM filter and any decent synthetic 5w-30 @ 5k changes will do well in a 2.4L

Sound advice here. ^

Side note, Thax, have you ever been to the Lombard training center? I’m Kia Master Elite, 5 year honors with Hybrid, Niro and Stinger.

I have a 12 and 13 optima that has the 2.4L in it and neither of them has any fuel dilution issues after apx 20K miles. I have had several UOA's done on both cars to confirm exactly that and to see how hard they were on oil. As far as the 0w40, just be careful because many of the European 0w40 blends are very high in Ca which is not desirable for LSPI . I would agree with others that a good quality 5 or 10 w30 would be a great recommendation. If you short trip or idle a lot then maybe you will have more of a fuel dilution issue than i have because I do not do either of those very much.

Side note- Between my friends and I, we have four of those engines that we bought new and they all have between 60K and 100K miles on them. One gets oil changes done at the dealer at 5K intervals and they use 5w20. One gets mostly PP5w30 and goes about 8K mile changes (mostly highway miles). Two use a mix of heavier oils usually 0w40 and 5w50 synthetics and go between 8K and 10K oci with mix driving. All of them have UOA's done, all UOA's look fine and all the cars run fine. Maybe the differences will pop up after another 100K miles but so far the engine doesn't seem to be overly picky about oil.

We use OEM filters as well.

Torino , nope never been to Lombard. I did all of mine @ Allentown PA. I got to Master with hybrid and Niro. I left Kia about 6 months ago to go independent right as the Stinger was coming out.

I left Kia as well. Got an hourly job working on buses for a school system. More money, better benefits and no flat rate headaches. I’m still in KGIS though. I think my old dealership is keeping me on to make themselves look better to corporate. I still get all the emails.

Awesome , I wish I was still in KGIS. My wife bought an 18 soul and 2 other KIA's in the family. The dpsm tried to talk me into staying , got [censored] when I said nope. I was out of KGIS before my box was on the roll back lol.
