Sometimes after sitting a couple days, I get the vtc noise upon first crank. I have a micro guard filter from O'Reilly and am wondering if a better filter (Mobil One, etc) might help make this happen less?

I'd say the Microgard is in fact a better filter than a Mobil1 filter. People are only paying for that name and getting a basic Purolator or Fram filter.

2012 2.4L engine, if you're lucky it is just a compromised filter adbv. Two other possibilities with that engine and year. As noted above VTC Actuator failure, and/or timing chain tensioner. The VTC shouldn't be ignored long.

I believe the spring is the correct fix. I haven't replaced mine yet.

But my 2010 Accord only rattles when it's really cold (sub freezing). Why is that?

Read where a guy was trying different oil filter and another turns key on for 20 seconds...just not wanting to spend big $$$ on this!

I have the 2.4 in my TSX and have had this rattle for a long time.. I have used several different filters and none of that made any difference but you are already using a better filter than the "mobil 1" IMO. In the Acura forums I have seen several posts of people having new actuators put in and many said the issue comes back anyway.

Before you do anything I would at least try this below from this vid.. Scotty is giving his suggestion but not saying that it is 100% fix for the whole planet. I would not use that rip off cro product that he recommends although it might be great.. I would try this first: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Motor-Medic-Motor-Flush-Engine-Additive-32-Fl-Oz/365527838

I'm using an older Microgard filter with a part number arrangement like those found on Wix products. About as good as it gets with respect to noise.

This morning after letting it sit for 3 days, I did the 20 second key on and no vtc noise at all, only tried 1 time, but if it works great!

What is happening during that 20 seconds?
The locks that are built into the VTC actuator, waiting for oil pressure to take over, and hold it's position - are not getting that pressure any sooner.
If the oil pump was electric, and not needing the engine to turn to operate, that would make sense.

I would love to hear more from folks who have done a deeper dive through this world. The 22nd idea sounds interesting, but I can't even remotely understand how that would avoid the timing chain rattle issue on these vehicles.
