I have a 2011 VW Jetta SE 2.5L with the automatic transmission. It's the 6 speed with tiptronic model.

What is the exact model number transmission and differential?

Are these transmissions and differential known for any problems or will they last 100K+ miles easily with routine maintenance?

The reason I ask is because I want to know if it is worth keeping the car until the wheels fall off or sell it while I'm ahead and get something else that is more reliable and less known to be problematic.

From my understanding the 2.5L inline 5 cylinder engine is reliable and I won't have to worry about it failing with proper maintenance.

I am uninformed about the transmission and differential on my car.

I Googled "VW 09G" and the results show mostly negative experiences with this transmission.

My car is under warranty until April 2014, so if anything did happen within the next year, it will be covered.

However, once the warranty is over, I will be paying to get whatever transmission or differential repairs are needed if it ever fails.

I think most of the problems with VW transmissions are related to owners not performing the routine maintenance on them, either because they were told the fluid was "lifetime" or because they just didn't bother.

The fact he is reasearching means he is ahead of 95% of owners out there. I try to talk up AT fluid changes to some women I know @ work and it is like $30 of preventative measure on a $1500 item is just crazy.....

There are basically two maintenance tasks performed on transmissions, fluid exchanges and replacements; pick one.

I dunno. I did some reading on it, a while ago, and am pretty sure the concensus on the 4spd slushbox behind the VW diesels were just failure prone. Behind the gasser they weren't that great; but it was a timebomb behind the diesel. Regardless of fluid changes. The DSG has expensive fluid changes *and* the problematic DMF. Both like to break around 150kmiles, give or take a large amount of miles.

I haven't been following the last 2 years or so (only ever was interested in the '06 and older), so maybe the DSG is all fixed; and maybe their slushbox woes are over with. But I bring it up just to state that, for a number of years, fluid changes didn't matter on these transmissions. Failmatics is a better term for VW automatics, IMO.

I posted on a VW specific forum and the VW members stated that failures rarely occur and the negative posts I am reading regarding transmission failures are few. Obviously failures occur, but VW seems to be on top of their transmissions these days.

I feel if I stick to 40K fluid changes, I should be set.

Actually, your car's powertrain is under warranty until you either hit the 60k mile mark, or 5 years after you bought it new. That would most likely put you into 2016.

BC.

In the spare tyre well you'll find a small white sticker with all your engine, trans, and option codes. Consult that for the correct answer. There is a DSG box, and a standard automatic trans. Keep the car, and keep an eye on your serpentine belts, and the idlers.
