A buddy of mine has a jeep,still under warranty, with 14k miles. He wants the best oil and filter available, price does not matter to him. I told him to go with either Amsoil or Royal Purple, and a Mobil 1 filter, leaning more towards Amsoil oil. It calls for 5W20, but would it be fine running 5W30? It tends to be pretty hot where we live. besides warranty concerns, would this engine do fine on 5W30? it has the 3.8 V6.

If its still under warranty follow the guidelines the mfr specifies and keep all your maintenance receipts.
IIRC, the Chryco recommended change is like 5 or 6K regardless of oil used. Personally, I would run Pennzoil Conventional, Quaker State Conventional, or Valvoline conventional in the 5W20 flavor and call it a day.
If HE wants to feel better and think he's doing his engine a favor, I know a few folks who run Mobil 1 5W20 in their rigs and they are wheeled often and are daily drivers. One of them only changes the oil once a year around 10K miles. They are clean inside and run mint.

Amsoil OE 5W-20 or XL 5W-20. Both fully meet warranty requirements.

+1 on Amsoil. Have him sign up as Preferred buyer (via Pablo) and order online and its at your door in a few days (minus the holiday on Monday). He can order you discounted oil also.

You *really* want to follow the owners manual on this one until it's out of warranty - the 3.8s are known oil burners and tend to spin main bearings.

I am new to the fourm here and I have been able to figure out most of the abrevations but I am stuck on Pennzoil conventional? Is there a cheat sheet anywhere that has a listing of common abrevations?
