Have this thing I need to service. Is the filter a screen or a filter? Any good recs on aftermarket fluid?

You should have the GM 6L45 transmission, which uses an actual filter, not just a screen. I just picked this up for my 2011 328i.
I also decided to use Valvoline full syn Dex VI.

Probably doesn't really need Dex VI, Stuff is expensive IIRC, many shops used DEX 3

That said, I have read similar statements about using Dex III. The price difference wasn't enough motivation for me to test this theory. I'm curious to hear people's experiences if they have!
You do really need dex VI, and is it not expensive. It's just about the cheapest ATF you can get.
I've seen guys using Dex III on the E90 forum, that said, I personally think the particular forum is full of questionable info and snobby posters. Just gotta be careful about who you believe in the internet.
DEXRON-VI is a superior fluid in every respect to the old DEXRON-III license. I used VI in my BMW for many years until I switched to Maxlife, it worked fine.

Yes VI is specs better, I totally agree on MAXLIFE, I worked with a guy who owned a tranny shop for years, MAXLIFE was his go-to fluid. pay your money and do your thing, just saying lots of shops used DEX 3 without issue. Change more frequently which is a good thing.
