I own a 2010 GTI also. I changed my FF at 3,475 miles. I did it at the 6 month mark. I will be doing 6 month OCI's. I drive 90% city. I did research on every 502 and 504/507 oil at there. The UOA's on the FSI and TSI engines, 502 oils don't cut the mustard past 5K. They don't hold their flashpoint retention either. I'm using Redline 5W-40 in my TSI because it hold its flashpoint even with the fuel dilution. It has one of the lowest Noack of 6%. This will help in the valve deposits.

I wouldn't waste your money on the Euro oils, Lubro Moly, Total, Pentosin, etc. They are no better then the US made oils. If you are worried about your warranty. I would use any of these oils for 5K.

Mobil 1 0W-40
Castrol Syntec 0W-30
Chevron Synthetic 5W-40
Kendall 5W-40
Pennzoil Ultra 5W-40

I would stay away from 504 oils in gas engines in the US. I did a VOA on some Pento Super 5w30. It has a really weak additive pack. If BMW and MB say not to use LL Euro 4 oils in the US do to our gas. Then this should tell you about not using 504 long life oil in our gas engines either. Even though VW hasn't offiaclly said not to.

VW doesn't use any special break in oil. They most likey use Fuchs 5W-40.

There's a guy who has a ton of Chevron 5w-40 in the for sale forum. He wants like $8 though, and on the West Coast.

I'm also not seeing the chevron on the list of approved VW oils I found.... Anyone want me to share this?

You have a new GTI and Golf TDI? You're lucky. Both cars are hard to find at US dealers. Dang Union Germans can't work faster.

Bosch, MANN, Wix (Napa Gold), Hengst (sometimes also in STP boxes), Mobil, Mahle. I'm probably forgetting some.

OEMs are best and designed for long OCIs

1) Mahle --VWs primary vendor (I use these filters exclusively and they are build like a tank! A good value through places like AutohausAZ.com

2) Mann -- VW alternate vendor..also are said to be excellent, but quite a bit more expensive.

Mobil 1 is an excellent choice and meets VWoA requirements which is the most important thing.

Mobil 1....0w-40? There is a pic w/a bad cam follower after 5k intervals on it. Going into summer, I'd get the 10w-40 HM. Wait I *did* get the 10w-40!

It didn't do well for this cam follower at 5k intervals after 81k. It's supposed to be solid on that side, like a thimble.

On HD oils, the followers do ok.

Also, the Havoline/Chevron Synth 5w-40 is 502 approved.

That follower in the pic could be a result of a defective piece or a modified set up, and or abuse. I'm not saying it is but the possibility is there...

But true I'd go for the Chevron Synth as well, it got you covered in every way possible.

Yes, but good luck finding the 5w-40. Honestly, Rotella 5w-40 or M1 10w-40 HM is the safest bet in a otc oil.

btw- I just got back from a visit at the dealer. I haven't seen those guys in a long time. I asked about the oil, it's drum Syntec 5w-40 and they said they don't give a hoot what I do as long as they service it every 10k.

after some talking with saaber1 I bought Motul 8100 X lite 0w30. This is a group IV oil, approved by VW. I will be helping out by doing UOA testing on it, something that Saaber1 doesn't have for that oil and the FSI motor. OCIs at 5k 6mo, UOAs done on first 3 Oil changes, then UOA's done every other oil change (ie every 10k miles)

The dealer may be looking for 5w-40 and may not substitute. This is an issue that just came up. I dunno if you are talking about DIY services or what. The Motul is a great product though.

This will be done DIY, I have a list of the VW approved oils, in PDF form, I can email it to you if you want, this motul, in 0w30 is on the approved list.
