I have only had this car for the past 4k and I am sure that it has only had the BMW OEM 5w30 in it since it is still under warranty. I have decided to go with a full synthetic and use the Motul 8100 X-Cess 5w40 for my next oil change.

I plan to keep this car a long time so I think that this is probably a superior oil to use in the N54 vs the BMW OEM Castrol.

Any thoughts.

X-Cess 5w40 will work just fine. It's BMW LL-01 approved.

Though unless you can get it cheap, there are plenty of good alternatives available at your local auto parts stores.

I am personally fan of Motul, but considering I can find GC 0W30 down the street in Auto Zone, I use that and it is BMW LL-01.

I used to be a bigger fan of the 8100 oils, but they've removed the ester content from everything except 300V.
