Hello, I am looking for an engine oil recommendation for a BMW 320D that offers stronger protective properties and allows the engine to run more smoothly. The engine is currently using Castrol Edge 5W-40. After approximately 7,000 km, this oil starts to be consumed, and the engine becomes noticeably noisier (our oil change interval is 10,000 km). The engine was fully rebuilt 110,000 km ago.

We believe that Castrol Edge 5W-40 does not provide sufficient protection for this engine and is not an ideal oil choice. We are considering switching to Motul 8100 X-cess Gen2 5W-40—would you consider this a good option?

Since the DPF has been removed, we do not think an LL-04 approval is necessary. In our country, summer temperatures can reach up to 40 °C, while winter temperatures can occasionally drop to around −5 °C.

Which engine oil would you recommend under these conditions?

Take a look at Ravenol RRS 5w50 if it can be suitable to your engine
In my country, it is very difficult to find engine oils other than Castrol, Motul, Shell, Mobil, and Liqui Moly. A 5W-50 would be too thick for this engine.

Can you get CK-4 HDEO oil? 5w-40 or 15w-40
This vehicle is used in all kinds of conditions (highway, city, and occasional spirited/performance driving). I could find oil in the class you mentioned (CK-4 HDEO), but I’m not sure how compatible it would be with the car.The only viscosity grade I can realistically use is 5W-40, and after some research I have not been able to find a 5W-40 CK-4 HDEO oil.

I think i'd use full syn diesel oil in it if it was mine or just change a bit more frequently. Castrol 5w-40 isn't the worst shering oil so using a similar off the shelf 0/5w-40 would yield similar results. You could try shell helix ultra if it's available in your country. GTL has run the quietest in my experience. No idea where you are.

Based on my experience with motorcycles, I am somewhat hesitant about Shell oils, because Shell motorcycle oils tend to offer less protection compared to Motul. Before this engine was rebuilt, we were using Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 LL01 in this car, and it performed relatively well. However, the mechanic who rebuilt the engine recommended Castrol Edge 5w40 for this engine. As I mentioned, though, we are experiencing these symptoms with that oil.

I live in Turkey.

You have eliminated Castrol Edge without any evidence whatsoever, and you feel that your modification means that the manufacturer standard no longer applies… which presupposes the profoundly incorrect idea that LL 04 is designed solely to work in concert with an intact DPF. I don’t think anyone here can tell you anything, but I’ll take a shot and suggest the Liqui Moly Molygen product with LL 04 rating. Or stay with that Castrol.

As far as I know, engine oils with a high protection (additive) package tend to be hostile to DPF systems. Oils with BMW LL-04 approval have a lower ash content, but at the same time they also have a lower protection package. Since the DPF has been removed, we can use oils with a higher protection package.

In my country, there is not even a Castrol Edge 5W-40 with LL-04 approval available. For a long time, we have been using Castrol Edge 5W-40 without LL-04 approval in the engine and operating it this way. I have personally carried out all repairs on the vehicle over the last 110,000 kilometers. However, the symptoms I mentioned are disturbing.

Because the engine in this vehicle operates more aggressively and with tighter tolerances than many other diesel engines, we are looking for a 5W-40 oil with a stronger protection package.

Liqui Moly Molygen does not have LL-04 approval; it has LL-01 approval.

Viscosity provides wear protection. The additive package is backup. If a quality 5W-40 is insufficient, another brand of quality 5W-40 will not be magically better.

Better to step up a grade and/or change oil more frequently.

In the owners manuals I have seen, you can usually find LL 04 listed with LL 01. Use the Liqui Moly or Castrol that has the specific manufacturer rating.

I bet Mobil blending facility at Serviburnu(Istanbul) still pumps out enough Delvac 1 5w-40 in two flavors :

I'd use either one in the 320d.

I am not sure about the legally required FAME content in diesel fuel in Turkey but the 2018 fuel survey by Infineum showed borderline hfrr lubricity for the humble number of samples they procured in Turkey...I'd make sure the gas station offers some FAME blended diesel or use an aftermarket additive.

Too much Jingle Bell. Should just to do it.

What does this mean?
:ROFLMAO: My Thai wife's version of "Stop wasting time and get it done!"
It's from a Thai cultural practice of holding ceremonies with officials giving long winded speeches and Buddhist monks doing rituals (some bell ringing) before they start to do anything.
Decades in and she still makes me laugh every day.

Shell Helix 5w40, Castrol 0w-40 or your Motul

I’m somewhat hesitant about these oils; however, having an API SL rating is actually an advantage, because due to older emission regulations they generally contain a stronger additive package and higher levels of protective components.

What are the real advantages of heavy duty diesel oils? In the past, many people used Shell Rotella in their motorcycles specifically because it carried JASO MA certification, and they reported trouble-free operation. JASO MA approval is required for motorcycles with wet clutches, as it ensures clutch compatibility and prevents slippage.
