My in laws Camry is consuming roughly a quart per1500 miles. It started to on 5w20 so went to 5w30. Was fine for a while but now seems to be doing it again. Using castrol gtx white bottle only so far. This is a replacement engine with unknown mileage to me but nothing crazy. Oil suggestions?? Sorry for lack of more thorough info.

What happened to the first one? At this point, I'd be using T6 in 5W 40 no matter what the book says, to see what happens. The stuff has been good to my three Camrys. Of course make sure the PCV sysem is OK and hoses and fittings are intact. Look for leaks showing up under the car as well.

Found this on carcomplaints.com. Maybe they will qualify for this warranty extension. Toyota seems to be sending out a lot of these. I just got a warranty extension for my sienna dashboard for the cracking/melting issue.

1/9/2015. Dear all . I got the following response regarding my complaint for "excessive oil consumption" form Toyota customer service.

According to our system, your 2009 Toyota Camry is potentially eligible for the following Customer Support Program, CSP: ZE7 Certain 2007 to 2009 Model Year Camry Extension of Warranty Coverage for 2AZ Engine Oil Consumption

In the interest of customer satisfaction, Toyota is offering a Warranty Coverage Extension (CSP) for 2AZ Engine Oil Consumption for a period of:

The Primary Coverage offers warranty enhancement until October 31, 2016, regardless of mileage. After the Primary Coverage period ends, the Secondary Coverage is applicable for 10 years from the date of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.

Please be advised that damage incurred from abuse, a crash, vandalism or other non-warrantable causes are not covered by the New Vehicle Limited Warranty or this Warranty Extension. The owner notification will commence in mid-December, 2014 and will be mailed over two months.

As there is no way to verify a warrantable concern until the vehicle is inspected, some dealers may charge a diagnostic fee on items that the owner feels should be covered under warranty. This fee will not be charged if the warranty coverage (CSP) applies. If the condition or cause is found to be a non-warranty covered item the diagnostic fee will be the responsibility of the customer.

Please continue to work with your local dealership to have the vehicle inspected and the condition verified.

Don't get caught up with this consumption- doomsday stuff.Make sure the PCV and breather is OK. Then just keep it topped off and change oil once a year/10K. The sales tax on a new vehicle will be more than the make up oil you will use for the remaining life of the vehicle. 1500 miles/qt isn't bad enough that I would lose sleep over.Might check extended coverage mentioned in previous post.

You do right using mineral oil here. Check PCV valve. If it is OK, start using MMO or Seafoam. Changing oil, do an engine flush. If PCV is OK, you need to free your piston rings.

One more time. Don't ask "which oil", because the proper answer is "any". Marvell Mystery should do a soft cleaning of stuck piston rings and oil passages.

Sorry, but 1qt/1500 miles will not likely qualify...no repair will be cheaper nor more cost-effective than just adding 3 quarts (@ $3 per for dino) between 5-6k mile $20 OCs (i.e. total $30 per OC).
