Hi guys. Do to a price that was too good to refuse, a new (used) car has entered our stable. It currently has 45K miles on it. All previous maintenance seems to have been performed at the dealership, so I think it has had Mobil 1 5w30 it's entire life.

This is the Northstar V8, has a 7+ Qt sump, and watching the OLM so far, it seems that we should be able to do annual oil changes as long as we keep mileage at 10K or so per year, which should be realistic.

While I will see to it that this car gets some highway miles mixed in periodically, 75% of its miles will be relatively short trips of 10 miles or less.

Keeping in mind the oil should be Dexos, I am leaning towards Mobil 1 or QSUD. I haven't owned a GM product in a very long time, so I am open to suggestions. Are AC Delco filters any good, or should I look at a filter designed to handle extended mile OCIs? The filter on it now is blue, but I cannot tell the brand. I'll gladly listen to any suggestions based on experience or other informed opinions. Thank you.

If you drive 10k miles or less a year and like to do 1 year oil change, then Mobil 1 0-5W30 couples with Fram Ultra will be perfect for your Caddy.

I had forgotten about the EP formulation of M1. That sounds like a good consideration. I need to look around to see what type of filters fit it.

QSUD or synthetic on sale if you feel you "must" use a synthetic. In 2009 DEXOS-1 was nothing but a idea. DEXOS motor oil specs did not come into effect until 2011.

I looked up the specs on a NAPA Platinum oil filter, and its awful. It only gets 50% at 20 microns, where a Fram ToughGuard or Fram Ultra gets out 99% of the junk at above 20 microns.

As for the oil to use, go with the Walmart gold bottle of Castrol Edge Extended Performance 5w30, good for up to a year or about 10,000 miles whatever comes first.

FWIW in my experience with the N* your OLM will go off before you each 10K with your mix of trips. M1 EP will provide an extra measure of comfort if you slip by 10k in 12 months. I've had outstanding results with QSUD for much le$$ money. M1 or K&N filters without debate.

I swear I could make a post about having a new baby girl and he would swoop in and make a comment about how great NAPA Platinums taste when they are crushed and mixed into baby food.

Its ridiculous.

Actually 50% at 20 microns is probably better than the 99% > 20 microns.

Haha. Nope. Try again. 99% @ 20 microns is same as > 20 microns ( as has been posted on here many times). So it I much better than the very poor 50% @ 20 microns.

The Northstar V-8 is not picky on oil. Oil consumption is not a problem since the rings were redesigned in 2005. Just use whatever 5w30 you prefer. I change conventional oil every 5,000. It's just easier to remember than checking the OLM. I put in an even 7 quarts, puts oil level halfway up the hashmarks. Filter, pick the color you like best. I'm going to continue using the P1. My PL25288 doesn't seem to have been affected by the tearing problem. But I am going to cut open the next one I take off. I am switching to synthetic on the next oil change, since AAP has been blowing out Hav Syn at give-a-way prices.

Thanks. Not knowing too much about this car or engine until recently, my original plan was similar to your current one; I was thinking a GM V8 would be just fine on conv or syn-blend at 5K OCIs. Two conditions are changing my mind however. 1) The manual says GM Standard GM4718M spec should be used. My understanding is that spec was a precursor to Dexos, that only synthetics qualified for the spec, and that Mobil 1 was the FF, evidenced by it being printed on the oil cap. Also, I'm guessing but cannot verify that if all previous oil changes were done at the dealer, that Mobil 1 or similar was used. And 2) I'll keep an eye on the OLM to verify this, but I'm thinking the relatively low miles this car will see might line up well for an annual oil change, or every 10K, whichever comes first. All that being the case, I'll stick with a syn. Probably some combination of M1, M1 EP, or QSUD oil, with a Napa Gold, M1, Bosch D+, K&N, or Fram Ultra filter. I appreciate everyone's advice and observations. Thank you.
