This is my wife's 2008 VW rabbit. FF was replaced with Amsoil Euro 5w-40, the manual recommended doing the first change at 5000 miles, the nxt one at 10000 miles (i.e. two 5000 mile OCIs), then do 10k mile OCIs afterwards.

Still looking like break in metals. You're feeding it a good diet though and those should trend down further on a ppm basis over your next sample period. Tin popped up out of nowhere, but is still at the noise level. I wouldn't be going all way extended drain crazy yet though. Your current plan sounds doable.

Yep, I agree. The wife drives ONLY city though, it is rare that the car gets highway mileage.

Still, I believe this indicates to me that shorter OCIs are necessary at the beginning, regardless...

I'm a fan of the short OCIs (factory prescribed interval at a maximum) to start AND starting with the oil chemistry and filtration combo that you expect to run for the long haul. The less variables the better!

My son drives a 2008 Rabbit. We purchased the car with 17k miles on it and the dealer stated they had just changed the oil. We ran the 'dealer fill' until 20k miles and then poured in Castrol 5w40. (During the last AutoZone sale, I purchased 15 quarts of Castrol and three filters)

Anyway, to the subject and debate of OCI in the VW's.....I just can't do 10K. My son does 90% start and stop, city driving, is pretty aggressive with the car having 5 on the floor and only has a 1.2 mile drive to work. With those conditions.....we are going to keep the OCI to 5k.

Also, I think we are going to pour in GC 0w30 for the winter fill here in Colorado where we can easily see sub-zero degree mornings.

Well ours will be the guinea pig. We WILL be doing a 10k interval this time on schaeffer's 9000 5w-40. My wife drives multiple trips every day, most under 2 miles. The only difference is that she drives quite gently, getting 26-27 MPG in city only driving.

The rabbit is not geared to be a highway car, and we minimize using it there. Around town, it is perfect. Many small cars are geared and designed this way, e.g. the rabbit, fit, etc.
