First, the engine was the same from 2004 (first year of the last hatchback) through 2009, the 1NZ-FXE (the redesigned 2010s have a different, larger engine). My 04 called for the then-current SL oil, in 5w30 grade, NOT 20 wt. In fact, when Toyota released the controversial 2006 TSB back-specing many previously 30 wt engines to 20 wt, it specifically excluded the Prius from the list of 20 wt engines.
I have run GC in our Prius (now being driven by my son) with outstanding results. Mpgs always hover in the mid-to-high 40s. A very thin, near-20 EC SM 30 wt might do slightly better, but I'm still very happy with the results.
