2008 Kia Rio, 5 speed, 62K miles
My friend is a nurse in Louisiana. She has always let the Kia dealer or TK do her OCIs at 6K miles or 6 months.
She has accepted a job in NYC. Now all of her driving will be stop and go in the city and to and from work only. Any suggestions on OCIs for NYC driving and using a synthetic oil and filter?

In cold states with a winter I would never change LESS than 2x OCI Late fall/spring. Well used oil wont meet the virgin CCS numbers needed for easy winter starts and running.

CCS doesn't apply in a NY climate; it doesn't apply in my climate in Canada and I'm 500 miles north of NY city.

The ideal oil choice would be TGMO 0W-20 or Mazda 0W-20.
Change the oil at 5,000 miles or annually in the late spring which ever comes first.

How do you know the CCS wont apply if you dont know what the used oil CCS is? IIRC (not sure as memory is going) it can degrade to 6600@ -25C for API SN.
UPdate
API GF5/SN allows, with "used oil", the cold crank results to degrade one step; a 0W-XX is required to pass under the 5w margin. Another reason ILSAC GF5 is improved.

For a 0w oil CCS is measured at -35C.
In NYC average winter temp's will hover around the freezing point consequently CCS doesn't apply. What does apply is choosing an oil with a high viscosity index.
Personally I have never noticed the cold start performance of a 0W-XX oil to degrade over a typical OCI at temp's down well below freezing; it is a none issue.

So, I can suggest to her to tell whomever does her oil changes, to use a synthetic like Mobil 1 0W20?
Would you also suggest using said 0W20 during the summer months? She really is not mechanically inclined, but does keep up her cars maintenance. I don't want to confuse her by suggesting one oil wt. for summer and another wt. for winter.

Isn't a 5W-20 spec'd for her Kia Rio?

I would suggest having her oil changed at a Toyota dealer to get the preferred TGMO if it's convenient or a Mazda dealer or a Honda dealer to get their 0W-20 OEM oils.
If those dealers aren't convenient then yes any 0W-20.
And of course the oil can be used year round.

Yes, 5W20 is what her car is spec'd. TK uses Valvoline 5w20 conventional and a ProSelect oil filter @ $24.95 + all the other add ons.
I have no clue what the dealer uses.

I bet the vi of a high vi oil is well degraded to average after 1/2 year 7K miles to say, less than 130.

I need to see some used oil viscometrics and move this conversation up a notch.

Up at my house we have had too many days of sub zero temps the past decade. Cold Flow is one thing and lubricity when cold is another. The API/ILSAC cam wear sequence allowance is still way too high at 90um - Almost 4 mil of wear AVERAGE. 4 thousandths of an inch wiped off and your cam is shot. I think I have a roller follower on the honda. Most cars should be using roller followers - thats why i was shocked, SHOCKED! to find our 05 rav 4 Toyota/Yamaha engine (2azfe) had a "vintage" shim-under-bucket Cheap-O dohc cam box.

We have plenty of used oil analysis of TGMO 0W-20 that indicated little shear and you must have shear for the VI to degrade.
Of course if you have an oil pressure gauge you'll know first hand if an oil start's to thicken up as the mileage mounts, and in my experience I've never seen it happen.

This is a non issue. We are taking about using the lightest oils available with a reasonable OCI based on a short commute.

She's leaving Friday morning for NYC. I told her she needs to use 5W20 in the spring and summer and 0W20 in the fall and winter. The look she gave me was classic!
I told her to try and find a Kia dealer or ask around the hospital she will be working at, if they know of a reputable shop.

I thought you wanted to make it simple for her with one oil rec' for year round use, and forget the KIA dealer.
Any 0W-20 will do.
