2008 Ford Focus - that's one ugly car.

Hard to pass judgement without actually seeing one in person. I do like the car, terrific driving dynamics and great interior space for a small car. Worlds better than a Corolla or Korean competitor from behind the wheel.

The Civic is a nice car but Honda has taken it upscale in price which leaves the door wide open for the Focus if Ford can keep pricing reasonable. Ford made a hige mistake in not developing the EuroFocus for the N. American market. The complaint that buyers here would not spend the money on a premium subcompact car was a major error in judgement. Just look at all the $22,000 Civics and Jettas running around. People would have paid that money for a very stylish and well appointed Ford if the car was available. Too bad for us, the Focus is a good little car built by a company with horrible management.

The cars that so many drive!!

Did oil change on one of these new Focus' the other day. While yapping with customer, I asked about mileage. He said USUALLY 30MPG!!!!!!! Can't believe that from econobox! does this guy not know how to figure mileage, or should he go back and kill the car salesman?

Ooops Civicfan i did miss the post where you said there are good American designs.... Finally the Big Three are making cars that are good if not better than the Japanese. They are worth a look, the focus being one example. Remeber the Tempo, things have improved.
 
Doesn't look too bad considering it will be competing in a class where nearly all of the competition is hideous. I think the mazda 3 is the only nice looking car in this category.

Our '06 Focus gets 30mpg in town and 35 on the highway. It's no surprise really, it has a 2.0L engine instead of a 1.8L, has good torque, wide tires, decent appointments, low road noise (for its class) and lots of room inside. Sounds about right to me... Others would say, "WHAT A POS!"

This new Focus, even though it is another rehash of the current platorm, is supposed to be light-years ahead in refinement. I belive them. The current Focus, though nothing to look at really, is a GOOD car. Not "great," but good, and it wouldn't take much to make it great...! They have the handling and build quality down, now they just needed to work on the NVH and a few of the other details which will probably be addressed in the new generation. I think this is a step toward a "premium" small car that everyone keeps talking about. We'll see...
 
Merc Gran Marquis! That's what makes 30mpg from a shoebox seem so sad. Wife's Gran Mommie gets 27+ with all the options and hilly,twisty country roads! Our old 94 Escort NEVER fell under 38. Why can't new cars do as well?

Because that Escort, like all other "compacts" 10 years ago were tiny, small-engined death traps.

Small cars today aren't all that small. Most people think my Volvo S60 is a "midsize" car, when its really only about 2" longer (if that) than our Focus, it's also about 6 inches shorter in height.

So, there's more weight from the car just being bigger. Lets not discount side-impact protection beams, a roof that can actually support the vehicle, airbags in every orifice, a bigger engine (2.0L with DOHC compared to a 1.6L SOHC, unless the Escort was a GT), etc.

I recenly sold a Neon when I bought my S60. The neon was considerably smaller than the Focus in every respect, yet it was still considered a "compact." It had a 2.0L engine and always got 35mpg as well but it didn't have anywhere near the safety features of new cars, nor did it feel as solid, as comfortable, or handle as well as the Focus. So, people want safety and a "nice" car? They gotta pay somehow...

I agree. Toyota was definitely trying to draw a visual connection with the 07 LS460 when they styled the new Camry. I think the same can be said for the Avalon, too.

I'm no fan of Honda, but I'll give them that the new Civic is "not bad" looking; anyway it's much better than the total snooze that was the previous generation Civic. It's got a pretty slick style that is definately unique in a sea of same-looking cars.

The CR-V, however, used to have decent, neutral, not particularly pleasing but not particularly nice lines. The new one is no less than visually offensive. I don't think I've ever seen an uglier front end on anything. Blech. Who could possibly like that thing?
 
What's so bad about it? (Rhetorical question.) I think it'll be fine. Once it's on the street, I think it'll look at lot better than those artisically produced samples on the website. Just my opinion.
 
I actually like the look of the new Focus, the interior looks good too. I'm amazed how far entry level cars have come. I like the exterior of the new civic, but that dash board with the old "boy racer" digital speedo reminds me of something out of the 1980's?
 
I have to agree with the above posters. The Yaris is a foul looking beast and the camry looks like a 90 year old coot from new jersey.
 
Ford seems to be taking after Dodge in that the feel the need to make their entire lineup follow after their trucks, even if the vehicle is the furthest thing from a truck. I don't get the obsession with trying to put big, chunky semi-grilles on cars.
 
I actually like the Yaris (I'm talking about the sedan, I think the hatchback looks like a buttplug), but I'm really not a fan of the new chrome grill that Ford has adopted on just about all of its cars. I don't much care for the all-around "boxy" styling of the new Chryslers/Dodges either.
