The same Mazda 2.3l uses a cartridge filter. I don't see any reason that the Ford version would use a spin-on instead.

The 2.0 uses a spin-on, but I don't know if Ford uses the 2.0, maybe in the Focus?

The Escape Hybrid uses a cartridge. The 2.3L duratec in the non-hybrid uses a spin-on.

The Mazda MZR is not the same as the 2.3L in the Escape. The Escape uses the non-VVT, choked down duratec. It doesn't have the HP or the torque that Mazda MZR engine has. The Ford Fusion 2.3L is closer to being a Mazda MZR than the Escape 2.3L.

badtlc, are the 2.3L in the Escape and the Mazda 2.3L related at all? My daughter has a 2005 Focus with the 2.0L, and I understand that this engine and the Mazda 3 2.0L/2.3L are related. It's a very smooth, powerful engine.

Is the difference between the Escape 2.3L and the Mazda MZR primarily the cylinder head?

From everything I have seen and done with my own two eyes and research (I own a 2006 mazda 6 2.3L and a 2007 escape 2.3L), the only thing they have in common is the block. Everything else appears to be different. The same thing with the focus engines. They are the same as the escapes, but not the Mazdas. They have a mazda based design history because Mazda started helping ford with all of the 4-bangers a while back.

On the other hand, the 2.3L in the fusion is very similar to the mazda 2.3L but not exactly the same.

All in all, the Ford 2.3L and 2.0L are based on Mazda designs and Ford engineers consulted with Mazda engineers while designing the 2.3L and 2.0L duratec.

I have a brand new 2008 2.3 and changed to synthetic at 1000 K and it is a spin on. The easiest change I have ever had. all right up front.

The Tribute uses the same duratec as the Escape. On others it is just a shared block.

badtlc, do you like your 2.3L Escape? Do you wish you would have gotten the V6? Is the 2.3L a smooth revver?

And, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

I'm not badtlc, but I have a Mazda 3 with the 2.3 Its an extremely smooth revving engine. Very quiet and powerful as well.
As for the Ford version, I have no idea what thats like.

I love it. It is not quite as refined as the Mazda but it is more than adequate for my wife's everyday needs. I have never considered the need for a V6 and never will. The 4 cylinder engines are so much easier to work on and and reliable, IMO. With the escapes specifically, the V6s have a mild problem with the ATX because they are a bit too powerful for that tranny. However, you would be hard pressed to find any Escape 2.3L/ATX owners having any problems with their tranny (it is the same CD4e tranny).

There is ONE regret. I wish I could have gotten the Escape (and my mazda6i too for that matter) with an MTX. The 2.3L/MTX Escapes get outstanding fuel mileage (30mpg+) and are very peppy/torquey, but alas my wife can't drive one.
