I'm about to change the oil in my Corvette, and I was thinking of using 10w30 PP instead of the 5w30 PP as the volatility number is better and I was told that the higher viscosity would reduce bearing wear.

Are there any negatives to using the 10w30?

I would think the 5W-30 would be just fine. It meets or exceeds all of the required specs for the Vette. Might try to contact Patman, he uses it in his Vette.

10w30 isnt a higher viscosity than 5w30.

in Louisiana there is really no downside to the 10w30 though.

either is fine.

Have you checked out the white papers yourself or are you going off what someone said. Someone could say Redline 5W20 has a higher HTHS then PP 10W30 but if you do not check their numbers how do you know I might be full of it and lieing to you!

First I would not put PP in my Corvette if I had one and would never recomend it to a client past or present! Second most true suynthetic 5W30's have better HTHS and higher viscosity then their 10W30 counter parts it all depends on how the company formulates their products no universal constant with that one!M1's 5W30 non-EP oil is thicker then their 10W30 Non-EP oil just for an example. The first digit has nothing to do with the second.

I would run M1 5W30,0W40,5W40 in a Corvette. I would also be strongly considering Redline 5W30 or Amsoil Series 3000 HD 5W30.

Does PP even cary the GM Spec for Corvette?

PP meets the Corvette spec 4718M in 5w30 and 10w30. I was going to use PP as Patman has had very good UOAs with PP and the other very good reports here on BITOG.

I emailed the tech support at Mobil and was told that the EP oils are not approved to the 4718M specification and to use the non-EP oil during the warranty period.

ant,
I also checked with Mobil tech and I was told the EP is approved and will be fine only the EP oil is targeted for a different customer, long OCI types. It doesn't show the 4718M spec. but does meet it off record.

IMO, 10w30 synthetics are obsolete, as the 5w30 version can do everything the 10w30 can do but with the added benefit of flowing better on initial startup. So there really is no need whatsoever to run 10w30 PP over 5w30 PP, you'll get no real benefits at all.

Don't listen to John Browning, I've noticed quite often lately he has no clue what he's talking about. Running a non approved viscosity like he suggested (0w40 or 5w40) is a great way to void your warranty, same goes with running Redline (as good of an oil as it is, I'd never chance running a non approved oil on a new Vette under warranty)

PP works very well in Corvettes (my UOAs are proof) and it most definitely carries the GM 4718M approval. See below for proof:

Agree 1000%

Got to love FACTS!

PP 5w-30 will protect your engine just fine. Follow the OLM and all is good.

Someday I'll get a Corvette for my 3rd vehicle.

Also, Walmart Supertech full synthetic meets the Corvette specs.

A 10-30 will have a bit more thickness than a 5-30 in intermediate warm up temps. But this is of no consequence.

My Vette cost too much and is still under warranty. I will do as the oil cap suggest as far as weight goes. Other than that, the only thing I care about is making sure my oil meets 4718M.

PS: There have been more oils added to the GM 2009 HP-oil list.

If the oil is certified to GM4718M, I don't think using 10w30 will jeopardize the warranty. But the consensus seems to indicate that 5w30 is the best choice.
