because oil is oil. seriously, we may not keep the car. I just spent $4,100 replacing the valley pan, valley pan pipe, gasket, and a sh!tload of seals, etc. b/c of various leaks. since I got 3 cases of Napa Syn 5w30, 3 cases of Kendall syn blend 10w30, and 2 cases of Castrol syn blend 10w30, just curious. . . . I know I can any of those in my truck easily. I also have about 40 qts of Mobil 1 so this is more a guess to see what I can get away with

Karma buddy! I hope you someday buy a vehicle treated as you are looking to treat yours. And if "oil is oil" as you say, just do it and don't bother asking people who you know are going to advise against it.

while I truly appreciate the New York holiday cheer, no one has said anything about mistreating this vehicle. In fact, if anything, I have been overly generous as I usually cut the OEM recommendations in half and am very aggressive about changing fluids, filters, etc. for instance, this vehicle only once went past 8,500 for an oil change when OLM said it was another 10,000 to go, and that was only to get a blackstone test for Mobil 1 0w40. Normally, the vehicle goes 6,500 max on full synthetic. Moreover, my questions were more towards understanding the limits of the vehicle vs the manufacturer having people believe the car will blow up if the fluids are not derived 100% from the BMW God's own "baby batter".

Merry Christmas to ya!

Statements like "we may not keep the car" and the likes of I'd like to see what I can get away with seem to indicate a strong predication toward selling. I don't see how I am misinterpreting that one, especially when you mention you have plenty of Mobil 1 0w40 already on hand.

You inquired as to the "limits of the vehicle" yet pay no attention to the people (engineers) who have already determined that there is a spec to be met. My 08 e90 has Castrol on the oil cap, I use Mobil 1. Doesn't matter as the ll-01 soec is met. If you don't want to meet the spec thats' all good but posting it up here was sure to get you the answer you didnt (or wanted to) hear.

I've been running MaxLife (it's a syn blend) in my M52 powered cars now for 60k+ miles. No CCV issues, clean as a whistle when the valve covers were popped for valve cover gaskets on both. Don't fear the mantra of 'LL-01 ONLY, unless you're under warranty. And absolutely, under no circumstances go the full 15k or more mileage interval unless you're running a top-teir synthetic. Part of the reason for a Full Synthetic recommendation is the extreme change intervals. I'm running 6-7k intervals with 0 consumption.

Was their an ll-01 spec for your M52? I don't think so. Does the M52 use the current VANOS and their well known tight passages? MaxLife is an awesome oil. I've got a good friend running it in her VW with a slight rear main seal leak. Working great for her. Doesn't mean MaxLife would do well in my E90 even if only for 6500 miles.

Designs and their requirements change from year to year. I'd imagine there have been some drastic changes since your M52 ([censored], some not for the better either!).

The M52 I believe specs ACEA A3 & LL-98. Lets keep in mind though, that the LL-98 was specifically targeted at a 15-20k mile change interval (cringe). What is this about 'smaller vanos passages'? I've not had the vanos apart on an N52 or newer, but I've taken apart the rest of them. Mind informing me on what I should have been looking at when disassembling & resealing the vanos units? [censored], the S54 calls for Castrol TWS 10W-60 - don't think that has any vanos issues with small oil passages..... But as stated, I wouldn't recommend MaxLife either unless it had a lot of miles on it, but I'd absolutely run it in these engines. Valvoline doesn't publish an HT/HS for their oils, but after chatting with Valvoline tech support, MaxLife 10W-40 has an HTHS of >3.0, probably 3.5 or higher, but they don't publish it, so they won't state for certain what it is or is not.

Oil is just oil, use lawmmower oil. LL-01 is just a money-grabbing scam.

Merry Christmas!
