Good evening Bitogers! I've just purchased a 2007 Volvo XC90 with the 3.2L all aluminum I6 engine for my wife. The car has 75k, and seems to have had average maintenance, occasionally at the dealership. From here on out, maintenance will be performed by me!

I'll be exchanging the transmission fluid tomorrow, using Mobil 3309. I'd also like to perform an oil change, and need some suggestions. The car will be used by my wife for short trips, and us as a family for vacations, etc. We are in South Carolina, so it is a temperate climate. I typically use Pennzoil conventional for my cars, but I'm considering a synthetic for this vehicle. Any suggestions or experience? I'm not an extended OCI kinda guy, I like my time in the garage with country music and a beer too much :-)

Also, if anyone has any experience with the XC90, or Volvo's in general, please chime in!

No experience with an XC90 but saw one the other day and was smitten! Don't know how they escaped my attention all this time.

Please tell us what your Volvo's manual specs so we have a starting point for suggestions.

So far, we really like our XC90. It's not something you see at every other stop light, and it fits our needs well. As a side note, I'm also a Jeep guy. I'm on my 11th Wrangler.....you absolutely can't go wrong with the 4.0L I6!

According to the manual, a 5w30 is the recommended grade for this climate, although a 0w30 or 0w-40 high quality synthetic is recommended for towing, extreme temperatures, or mountainous driving. Thanks for any recommendations!

Congratulations. Volvo are good cars. I love the interiors. I've had S80s with 3.2 as rentals several times up to a week at a time. I'm jealous you can use Mobil 3309. My Saab has the same transmission but silly Saab called for this AW-1 fluid that is much more money than Mobil 3309.

In terms of motor oil, if the manual gives you permission to use 0w-40, I'd use Mobil 1 0w-40. I use this in several cars. It's one of Mobil's premier products as it meets so many European specs. Sure, it will be fine with Mobil 1 5w30, 0w-30, or Pennzoil Platinum/Ultra 5w30, but Mobil 1 0w40 can be found so cheap, why not? Some might argue you wouldn't need a 40 weight in most driving conditions. True, but still, I'd take advantage of the manual giving me that option. Of course, I have a bias towards that product. I'm sure you will choose what's best for your personal preferences.

I highly recommend the Mann oil filter which is same as OEM search for part Mann HU9254Y on Amazon or E Euro Parts. It's less than $8.00. Made in Germany and includes O-Ring for the filter housing. I'd also recommend Mann air and cabin filters if you ever change those as it's likely the OEM.

My 2006 XC90 was changed to AMSOIL Signature Series 5w30, AMSOIL ATF, and AMSOIL power steering fluid before I picked it up from the seller. Have changed the oil once since then--PITA with the special oil filter wrench.
