Going to get going on a head gasket job in a week or two on my 07 Outback. This is the EZ30D H6 (3.0 R) engine with the 5 AT.

Once that is all finished up, I'll move on to suspension, power steering, cooling, and brakes.

I'll update this thread as I move along. I'm anticipating a lot of cussing, triumph, and defeat.

I always did like the Subaru flat six.
Thirsty but strong.
It will be interesting to hear about your experiences with the repairs to this car.

It is much easier to just pull the engine to do the work. Very simple on these cars.
I absolutely agree. I have wheel dollies and a hoist.

What's wrong with the engine?
Exhaust gases are pushing coolant up in the overflow tank. I bought the vehicle with this known issue and got a great deal. Otherwise engine sounds great.

No, easy out and in. Mount it up on a cheap and cheerful HF engine stand (it is a very light engine) that makes everything but splitting the cases easy work.
Engine stand. This is not for heavy engines.

Update! Today was the day! Got the H6 pulled out of the Outback. Bell housing pins were frozen so I used some PB Blaster along with a 2x4 and a 5lb mini sledge and that took care of it.

I'll start pulling the intake and everything off the top this week possibly then into the infamous timing cover.

I've decided I'm going to use a hand impact driver and a hammer with the 5mm hex as that seems like the best chance of getting these 9 million bolts out without stripping them.

She's dirty!
