Hello guys, i recently switched over to synthetic in my V6 accord, currently using the syntec 5w20. It really seemed to quiet the motor down, most noticeably above idle speed.

I'm curious about the Edge. I've seen other UOA reports that come back well on hondas. I'd probably use the 5w30 because i cannot seem to get my hands on the 5w20. This doesnt seem to be a major issue though because it seems that the Edge's viscosity is closer to a 20wt.

Anyway, i've seen many guys pushing the PP/PU. I've also seen reports that the ultra makes a little more noise than others. This i'd like to stay away from. On a side note, my local dealer uses and recommends castrol. Reguardless of which oil i use, i wont push any more than 8k miles or so. Thats just my comfort limit. Next time, i plan on using a mobil 1 extended performance filter, unless another is recommended. I dont mind paying the extra $ for a better oil either.

I'm curious what you guys have to say.

I can't speak about PU since I haven't tried it. In 20 grade oils I've used M1 0W20, PP 5W20, Amsoil ASM 0w20, and now Edge 0W20. My Jeep is quietest with the Edge of all the 20 grade oils I've tried.

As long as I can continue to buy it as part of an oil change special, I will most likely continue to use it.

For your planned OCI a M1 filter or a Pure One filter would be fine. P1 filters are usually a little less costly. I use both depending on which one is part of the oil change special at the time.

another quiet engine on Edge. Cool.

Just curious, does your jeep call for 5w20 or 0w20?

It calls for 5W20. I use Synthetic oil, so the cost of 0w20 vs 5W20 is not an issue. I prefer 0W20 over the 5W20, but that's just me.

I had great results with syntes fw20 in my 05 focus 2.3. If it works stay with it.

I haven't tried Edge but comparing PU vs. PP in my 2007 Accord V6, it seemed a bit quieter at idle with the PU. The car has 62k on it. I run it to about 10% on the mileage minder since I get annoyed with the little wrench-reminder-light always staying on :-)

Before I get flamed, I know that with synthetic I could run it a lot farther. My comfort zone runs out about 7500 miles or so, and we aren't talking mortgage money to do another oil change then.

Oil consumption was virtually nil in either case, but maybe a tad less with PU. The times I've used M1 it seemed to use about 1/8 quart. That's still not oil consumption at 7k +/-

In all cases I've used 5w20 but doubt it makes a difference if you can't find that weight locally.

Similar conclusions drawn from my,Bass boat towing, 02 V6 Accord at 109,000. The M1 5-20 burned a few ounces over 6m/4k. Switched to 5-20 PP. No burn(PP was more dense),felt nice, seemed done at 6m/4k. Switched to M1 EP 5-20. No burn, felt nice, seemed done at 10m/5300. Now,all I run is M1 EP 5-20 using a 6 month,Fall and Spring, oci which is 3800-4400 miles for each oci. So,if I were going to run Pennzoil,it would be only the Ultra.

My Corvette is quieter with Edge (5w30) than Mobil 1. It also showed 3 times less lead in a UOA.

But a lot of UOAs tend to show that Edge may not go 15,000 miles. Pennzoil Ultra, while not advertised as a 15,000 mile oil, shows up well in UOAs.

Not sure you can go wrong with any of them.

I would use Ultra, IMHO it's likely the "best" over the counter oil in 5w30 and 5W-20 viscosities.

i'm going to try either the edge or the ultra next. I think the price will determine with at the time. I'm only going to run the syntec to about 5-6k miles.

Either oil will not be pushed more than 10k miles anyway so i'm not going to realllyy stretch it out.

Can't go wrong with either. But I had very good results with the way Edge ran and especially how quiet it was in a few cars, so I switched my baby (Mazdaspeed 3) over to Edge yesterday. I have to say, yet again, this is another car that responded extremely well to Edge. The smoothness and remarkably, the quietness, once again. I've ran many oil's in it to find "the one" and I am very much liking it so far! I don't know what magic sauce they put in Edge to make it so quiet, but color me impressed.

Good to know. I'll probably try edge first. I am looking for an oil that provides the most wear protection and a good balance of cleaning agents. I know ultra is made heavily with cleaning agents, and may be to aggressive for what i'm looking for. If the edge provides more wear protection, thats the oil i'm looking for.

I see you went with the 5w30 in the MS3? Is that because you couldnt find the 5w20 edge or that the edge is already a thin oil to begin with?

Those are just the traits the marketing departments choose to focus on. Ultra seems to be the superior long drain oil, regarding wear protection I would expect them to perform just about identically, remember Ultra also advertises unsurpassed sequence IVA performance.

thanks for the input. Both are on the "next to try" list. We will see which one the engine seems to like better, if any. I've read hondas are "easy" on oil to begin with anyway.

Nah. It's actually what's called for in the manual now. The regular 3's spec 5w20 but the MS3's call for 5w30. Though there is a TSB out now that says to put 5w40 in my car if smoking at idle. This is not the oil's fault, but the turbo's seals in my car's turbo are known to be very poor, so thinner oil's push past the turbo seals and causes the car to smoke. I used 5w30 b/c winter approaches and I wanted a thinner oil than 5w40 but not so thin as a 20 weight. Though I have no doubt my car will make it a 20 weight in no-time anyhow. Something it's known to do. Shear oil very quickly. lol

mattd, what oil was you using prior to syntec?

I am running Motomaster F1 Syn (FormulaShell Syn) 5W-20 on the 07' Accord V6. This engine is just so silky smooth...

I only notice there is a great smell of fuel when i check oil! It has virtually no consumption after 6k miles. The oil life monitor just went down to 10%! Currently odo reading is 28k miles! I will change it to F1 dino (FormulaShell dino) and see if i could feel any change.

Its funny you mention the fuel smell. I notice the same thing with mine, even after a 200 mile one way trip! Not sure why, but i am curious to the cause. Got 30 mpg on the way up doing 75-80mph the whole way

I was using a bulk 5w20 special blend oil from dennis burke oil company. Our shop got it in 55 gallon drums.

Anyone know what may cause that fuel smell? I guess i am not the only one to notice.
