Hey, I searched (albeit probably not correctly) for what people were running in their 4.7's. A friend of mine recently picked one up and he's wanting to switch over to a synthetic. I assume we'll be fine w/a name brand 5-30 I was just curious if there were an used oil analysis w/solid results for a particular oil. Thanks in advance!

chevron supreme sythetic oil is a great oil... check this site out 4 Files Download All
2010_Product_Fact_Book_(r).pdf (1380KB); Chevron Supreme Motor Oils (API SM).pdf (72KB); Chevron Supreme Synthetic Blend Motor Oils.pdf (62KB); Chevron Supreme Synthetic Motor Oils.pdf (68KB)

Any 5w30 conventional, blend or syn would serve his 4.7 well. The only oil my 4.7 didn't like was Mobil Clean 5000 5w30. I ran Valvoline Synpower 5w30 in my 4.7 for years. It's a great oil.

I used 0w30 GC in my 03 dak 4.7 until I sold it with 135,000 miles.

I use it now in my 02 QC dak 4.7 with 60,000 miles.

You will actually want to run a 5w20 in that. The 4.7s started using 5w20 to meet CAFE requirements. You could use a 5W30 but best to use a 5w20. Probably a synthetic like mobil 1.

I agree with the 5w-20 recommendation.

I understand that this might be a truck application, but the 4.7L SOHC is a gasser at it's heart, and not a diesel. That being said, any of the major brand names in oil will protect it well.

The real issue you should be investigating is whether or not you want to extend your drain intervals. If so, synthetics make sense. If not, then there are plenty of good conventional oils that will do a great job for minimal investment.

Generally, used oil analysis show that synthetics don't protect "better"; they protect "longer".

Thanks for the replies! I'm not sure where I had read 5-30 was the right choice. I'll double check the manual for the proper weight. He is looking for a longer drain interval, I figured a name brand synthetic was the obvious and easy choice just wanted a little validation :)! Thanks again, I think we'll give Mobil 1 5w20 and a Wix filter a try.

Try the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20. Very robust oil for longer drains. If by chance 5w30 is the correct weight, then try the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30.

I run MC 5w20 in my 4.7 durango with 7-10k mile changes. It loves the stuff.

with about 80k on the truck.

I have a friend with the 4.7 whom has run Amsoil 5w30 and the maximum he can get out of the OCI is 12.5-13K. These little engines are tough on oil. I would try a couple of oils like Mobil and Amsoil an see what the used oil analysis tell you. He has over 100k on the engine now and it does not use a drop within the 12-13K OCI. He is going to try the 0w30 next time around to see if he can get past 15K

The best results I get on mine, which is a 2007 4.7 in a Ram, is with the Amsoil 0w-20. It works even better than the 0w-30.

The only 4.7 I have any direct experience with is a 2008 that my father bought just over a year ago. Only had 1 oil change so far and he went with Mobil 1 5w20 (despite the guy at O'Reilly trying to push 5w30 and treating him like a doddering old man who didn't know what his truck called for- he's only 81, after all

). Just not enough miles on it yet to draw any conclusions, though, other than "no strange noises or odd behavior."

2003 Durango with a 4.7. I am using Pennzoil conventional now, 5 quarts with 1 quart of Pennzoil Platinum. I am using the old Amsoil SDF-15 oil filters. have to run my stash down.
