My recent buy of the 2006 VW Beetle with the 2.5L engine, and have a question. I have been doing some preventaive maintenance items such as tranny flush etc. I noticed with my scanner hooked up, highway engine temps fall to around 183F, and stays constant. When I get to a stop and idle, it will rise to around 205-207F, (which I think is normal) then back to highway and it falls down.

I expect I have a jammed open, or at least a faulty thermostat, Its the origianal and 18 years old, so I am buying a new one. Labour of 4.5 hours as the intake manifold has to come off. Any thoughts on this issue?

I would tend to agree with you. Both of my VWs keep a constant temperature once operating temp is reached. Only on accelerating up steep hills ( I live in PA) do I see the temperature increase somewhat. You should put a new water pump in there while you are at it.

If you see only on scanner and not needle, don’t touch it.
Gauge doesn’t project 100% correct temperature. Temperature always fluctuate.
During warm up phase, does needle go back once you stop at traffic light? Does it go back at downhill portion of road?

girlfriend had one, a great reliable engine that did NOT consume any oil until she traded at 70 some thou BUT it was like yours COLD BLOODED!!!

Had a 09 Rabbit for a long time - it would pretty much stay at 185-193, mostly just holding 188.6 the whole time regardless of condition. We just had a 06 Beetle in the shop that would run hot (230F at idle), put a new thermostat it in and now 188.6 at idle no problem. Definitely buy an OE thermostat for it if you do.

On the MG and the Alfa it does go back down, if the heater is on. On my dad's Citroen it just stays put.

It's 100% normal to have that much fluctuation.

Does not have a guage, just a light when cold

Is the waterpump a point of failure on these engines?

OEM thermostat $121, vs $10 for Motorad

Of course its going to run warmer sitting still. Going down the road air is being forced through the radiator. Sitting still no air is going through the radiator and you must wait for the electric fan to come on to pull air through the radiator.

Sounds like your fan is set to come on around 207f which is normal. If you turn the AC on the fan should come on immediatly and you wont have that much temperature fluctuation.

Remember that a thermostat only controls the minimum temp. Once over that temp its open and the radiator is what determines the upper temp.

Not sure, but my 2000 VW with the 1.8 runs 205-206F almost all the time, after I put in a new T-stat

Loads and rpm and thus heat generation are constantly changing. Add to that wind and direction and car speed and cooling is also constantly changing. The thermostat is reactive, not proactive (except in those cases where they can regulate to 2 different temperatures due to an extra heating element).

Was that 205/206 as reported by a scan tool or on the dash?

176F is OE temp to open, but I'd replace it anyway. Just get the whole plastic assembly and since the water pump is easy enough it wouldn't be the worst idea either.

I think that is fine. 207 is not hot, and 183 is fine. I wouldn't touch it. I am familiar with this engine as I maintained one. If the plastic assembly is leaking, I would replace that. That is fairly common.

Scan tool, these cars have no temp guage
