The parts guys at NAPA only have a listing for a 3.0 liter engine. A couple of other parts stores around here give me conflicting answeres, and the Subaru dealer parts guy insists I must use a Subaru filter to maintain the warranty. Do any of you guys know a NAPA or WIX or Baldwin # for this car? Do I really need to use the Subaru filter? Who makes that?

Go to the Baldwin filter catalog and you can find your filter. Go to the other manufactures website and cross reference it if they don't show 2006 models.

Your Subaru parts guy is full of it. You can use any filter you want as long as it meets the requirements.

So I had to look up a Purolator PL14612 and a Fram PH9715 which crosses to Baldwin B1400. As long as the base design is the same, can I use the listed Baldwin B1431 or B1402 which are long versions of the B1400 but no specifically listed for Subaru?

Anbody done this?

I use the B1402 on my 2005 Outback Sport (same 2.5L engine) and have been for the last 23K miles with no problems. I think I also have some B1431s that I haven't gotten around to using.

Wix lists the 06 outback in both engine offerings.

Gaskets, bypass settings, and threads are identical. Can size and beta numbers vary. All have ADBV.

I'm willing to bet that the NAPA Gold filter listed for the 2005 Outback 2.5 liter engine will also fit the 2006 Outback 2.5 liter engine. I'd buy the Napa Gold filter listed for the 2005 and take the stock filter off your Outback and carefully compare the two, especially the diameter and the screw-on threading. If they're the same, the filter for the 2005 will work, but make sure it threads onto the engine properly.

The guy at the Subary dealer is definitely full of it. He just wants to make money off you by selling over-priced OEM parts.

The Made in Japan filters are toyo-Roki and the domestic OEM subaru are Purolator I believe. My Forester came with a roki filter from the factory. I always get the Made in Japan filter as it is extremely well made

I agree. Cut one open after my last oil change, and was impressed with the construction.
