2006 Malibu turn signal switch requires "update"?

An elderly client just had her signal stalk break on an '06 Malibu.

I figured no problem, just order a new switch, right? Pretty common repair in general these days.

Well, according to the parts listings you can only get an updated switch, which then also requires a new wiper switch (a RH stalk on the column), a new mounting bracket and a new clock spring.

Ok, this still isn't THAT big a deal but I'm unclear specifically on the clock spring. None of the clock springs specifically say they are "updated" and so I'm wondering what about the clock spring changed?

One Dorman listing seems to suggest the new clock spring bolts into place? But I don't know what the alternative was? Just clipping into place maybe?

I ordered a clock spring that is supposed to cross to GM 15925948 / 15784597. Is this correct for the other "updated" parts?

Wondering if our GM guru @clinebarger has any input?

Cool thank you. I ordered Rostra parts for both stalks (signal, left and wiper, right) and an SMP bracket of CBS2150

I ordered an inexpensive import clock spring on ebay because the only one RA shows is ~$190 and this woman can't afford that (fixed income etc)

First I've heard of a screw!! I'll have to look into that.....

At least I am being entertained at work today. Literal storm clouds overhead, we are supposed to get rain the next 5 days (huge deal here) and they are washing cars on the lot.

What's weird is some of the aftermarket clock springs claim to also cover the Pontiac G6 from something like '06-10.

If you call up a clock spring for that application options really open up, but none of them seem to cross to the GM 15925948. Instead, I think they cross to one less: 15925947

Here again some aftermarket clock springs claim to fit something like '04-11 Malibus while others claim only '06 and '07 Malibus. I dunno how some parts can be more universal than others.

It's a mess is what it is.

If the existing SIR Coil is clipped on....You have first design parts.

Updated Bracket.....21994375
Updated SIR Coil.....20940370
Updated Turn Signal Switch.....20940369
Updated Wiper Switch.....15913466

OK thank you!

I watched one vid on an '06 Malibu and his was bolted in....so either he already had updated parts or it was a late build or something

I already did the steering torque sensor on this vehicle and someone had already done that sensor at least once before (damage and carelessness was evident). But I have ZERO recollection of how the clock spring was retained -- who would think to note that unless you knew it was significant??

So, GM was really struggling with steering column stuff on this model :(

Here's what started all this. Should be simple, but that would be too easy.

Because she's so broke I know she'd want me to glue it, but I don't have faith it would hold up. That's a lot of leverage.

I repaired this today. She had her "handyman neighbor" do a temp fix which I found absolutely hilarious. However the end of said repair was incredibly sharp, and somehow as a metalworker I found this personally offensive. We know you always chamfer edges or at least debur.

I think GM had a TSB on using a shelving standard for a turn signal stalk?? You can't make this stuff up....

ANYWAY, I didn't have to change any other parts. The new Rostra switch fit, except I had to file back these tabs that retain the turn signal switch in the bracket. I also checked it in the new bracket I (unnecessarily) ordered, and same story. This was a poor fit by Rostra.
