Guy working for me has a 2006 Pilot, about 140K miles. It has developed a slow oil consumption "issue", roughly 1 quart 6K miles, in the past 30K miles. I know it isn't bad. He's running Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w20 with a 10K mile OCI but to totally eliminate it I suggested that he go to a 5w30 or a 10w30.

I also suggested he get a used oil analysis just to be sure something else isn't going on.

Wondering if my suggestions for course of action are good.. Thoughts are welcome.

I think that's a pretty reasonable consumption. I wouldn't count on a 30 weight oil curing it either. Maybe a new PCV valve but really that's an amount that he should just learn to live with.

I don't think a 30 grade oil will do anything to the consumption either. If anything, I might try a high mileage 5W-20. But if the consumption is from cylinder wall or ring wear, then a high mileage oil probably won't improve on that.

In short, with only a quart in 6,000 miles at almost 150,000 miles on the engine, I'd say that's decent and not worth losing any sleep over.

it's a Honda, they are known oil burners. His is not all that bad. If It was my car, I'd be Pi$$ed. I NEVER want to add oil between changes. tells you a manufacturer I'd never buy from..

You're kidding....right?

I'd stick with the 20 grade oil too, and service the PCV system. If that doesn't work give Kreen a shot. JMO Either way a qt of oil in 6000 miles isn't bad.

Most Mobil 1 oils are not great as far as oil consumption goes compared to the competition imo, and I'm sure this is by design and they make a lot of $$ just in make up oil. The higher revving Honda 4cyl's go through Mobil 1 30wt oils like koolaid. There's a 05 TL in my family with a V6 similar to your Pilot's that only consumed any with Mobil 1 0W-20. None with PP or Castrol.

And how often do you change oil?

Yeah, it sucks when you have to add a quart every 6K miles. It's probably once every 6 months for most people. That is really tragic indeed. I feel your pain.

FWIW I've never owned a car in my life that did not consume at least a little bit of oil. My 2011 Civic consumes about half a quart over an entire OCI. Who cares.

I owned a 2005 honda civic for 5 years and I never had to top up.
I had to change the oil every 5000 miles, I used the honda branded oil.

I change my oil every 4500-6k WITH 105-130 engine ideling hours.. It does not consume a drop..EVER it has 206k on the clock.
Your Honda????
No, Im not kidding.. they burn oil at a crazy rate..the reason I WOULDNT own them.

Exactly

I laugh when I hear 6K to 1 qt and oil consumption in the same sentance.

That amount of oil burning is perfectly acceptable and nothing to worry about. I wouldn't change a thing, just check it and top off as needed.

I change my Honda every 4K to 6K with 105K on 3.5L engine does not use a drop with 0w20 or 5w20 but one QT in 6K is nothing to lose sleep at over.

Uh....you reason for not buying a car is very very lame.

Did you know toyotas burn a lot of oil? So does GM? So does BMW?? So does Subaru? hrmm...list goes on and on...

There is not a single "still running engine" that uses absolutely no oil...

6000 miles per quart is fine
I agree Honda is not what it used to be but they still make a pretty good engine.
Here in my engine shop we rebuild lots of Hondas but that is because there are so many of them some are bound to have problems.

Indeed. But if a engine consumes any oil especially a qt every 6K means that it is a poor engine design and the quailty of the engine is just awful, I can not explain this any better than that, it is a bad engine from a bad company it is simple as that. 1 Qt of consumption over a engine lifetime of less than a half million miles is just uncalled for. Honda should be out of business tomorrow because Honda can not build or design a engine that does not consume oil and that is just unsatisfactory.

I would NOT buy any of the oil burners listed..Honda AT's, CV axles, GM truck dash clusters, GM gas truck super loud fuel pumps..just to name a few..if I'm paying with my hard earned money I want to buy a BETTER engineered vehicle than that.
