Hi all! I have a friend who is going to purchase a 2006 Honda Accord. It has only 80,000kms on it, and I went with my friend to check it out. Tires were bald, and had jobber brakes/rotors on it.. under the hood, the obvious being he will need to swap out the fluids, power steering, transmission, oil, coolant. Besides that the dealer promised to fix bad links, throw in brand new winter tires, and replace the brakes (assume just pads..) and I noticed on their inspection report of a power steering leak. So I questioned them about it, and they told me the rack needs to be replaced but said I could just add P/S fluid every 6 months to a year.. They proactively said they would give him a check for 600$ to have it fixed. I figured its a bit odd that they would do that instead of fixing it.. I am not mechanic but know a bit about cars. The car also has a hitch on it, so it was used for towing, although fairly low miles on the vehicle itself. I am not sure if that would be an area of concern, but he is getting a good price because I think the dealer wants to get it off their lot since its an 06. My question is, I know it says Honda P/S fluid only, but was wondering if there is any stop leak or additive that can be added to reduce the leak, just to be on the safe side prior to getting this fixed. I was also looking for a recommendation on maybe using a synthetic PS fluid to further improve the feel of the steering. Anyone with this model or similar model car, I would appreciate all and any advice you have for this year car, also in terms of things to look out for. I looked in the oil fill hole and it looks clean and good (although i know its not a scientific or logical way to ensure the engine is in good shape) Thank you all in advance!! PS. Any knows issues with the Auto Trans on this model accord?

Yes, if it was a $600 fix, they'd have done it, and sold the car for $1,000 more.

The transmission is probably fine, especially if it's a 4-cylinder model. But with the abuse it's endured and the questionable parts already used, you never know what's around the corner.

I'd back away from this car.

I think there might be a secret recall on the power steering racks. A buddy bought one used from a Honda dealer and in a couple months the rack went. The dealer fixed it, no charge. Could've just been a dealer looking to keep a customer, but I'd do some research for a recall.

I have the exact car...there is a recall on the power steering lines, regardless of who owns the car. Get to a Honda dealer.

From what I see the recall refers to a P/S fluid hose.. I also noticed a pdf on how to replace the O ring from the power steering pump inlet joint. I need to find out where the leak is happening from, but I will make sure my colleague has all the recalls looked into and fixed by the dealer. Thanks for the info!! Its a 4 cylinder engine though.. so dont know if that makes a difference..

I thought the P/S recall was only on the V6 Accords?

If he can get it cheap and you and him can do the work, might be a good car. But I would not pay retail for it. Cheap or walk.

Recalls aren't secret. If it's an NHTSA safety recall, it should have already been performed; in most states, it's not legal to sell a vehicle with an outstanding safety campaign on it. There could be an extended warranty on some of the power steering parts, which should be fixed for free at a dealership if they do fail. This is separate from a recall.

Yeah he is getting it for 1500-2000 less than similar accords around that age. Its all leather, sunroof, fully equipped and low mileage. Its not a major issue if he has to spend 1000$ in a few years to fix it completely. If the car will last to 250-300 thousand km's with few other issues, he wont be concerned too much. I just hope this is the only big issue.. Its being purchased from a Honda dealer.

Well there is one plus. Since it's a 2006 it'll have a K24 that should be free of the stupid VTC actuator problems.

You could try Lucas power steering stop leak? I haven't but it has some positive reviews on amazon.
Have you got any quotes from other shops to do the job. Maybe talk to the shops and see what they'd recommend.Remanufactured racks for this year are usually around $300+ with the core charge. Labor can be a killer on top of that, unless you have a good mechanic with low overhead.
Sounds like a good find once you get the details worked out.

You will probably need a rebuild, and I am not sure which rebuilder to recommend. I often end up with something that was carelessly sprayed with black paint, and doesn't last. As I like to say, if they can't do something as simple as painting it properly, what else do they not know how to do?

Do Honda dealers have their own reman PS racks? I would do that if it was an option.

+1

It sounds like the required repairs are too costly to make it worth the dealer's while and he wants out from under it in a big way,.

If your friend is limited to that price point and doesn't want a potential project car, find one with twice the kms on the odometer and a documented maintenance history.

I wouldn't be adding stop leak to a low mileage car. Just top it off til you can repair it. I also wouldn't be experimenting with expensive fluids until the leak was fixed. In my experience a slow rack leak turned into instant gusher quick. I've never seen one that leaks slow.

As far as I know Honda's need power steering fluid for Honda's, We use Sta-Lube Brand at work and have for over twenty years, I think stop leak is not available for this fluid and STAY AWAY from lucas power steering tar as it will never flow through the filter material in the base of the PS bottle. PS hose on V-6's was the only racall and the inlet elbow O ring was only on V-6's as well. I was told honda type P/S fluid has alot more anti foaming agents at a steering parts clinic but not sure how the teacher knew that so there you go.

Let me understand this. This is a Honda dealer who would rather give the buyer a check for $600 to fix steering rack than fixing it himself on a Honda Accord???? What? He has no mechanic on his payroll?

ATP 205 reseal will fix any power steering leak....

ATP products are awesome IMO

however the ATP 205 reseal is the best and its NOT a snake oil.

its looks like water and its clear.

Also if that car has a timing belt it will be time to replace the timing belt and water pump very soon.

is that a v6 or a 4 banger ?
