Okay, I'd like to know what you guys think of the '06 Dakota. Experienced opinions would, of course, be preferable. Have one and love it? Would you like to personally put yours through the shredder? The good, the bad and the ugly, let's hear it.

The one I'm looking at is a low-mileage 4-door extended cab, with a 3.7L V6 and automatic transmission, BTW.

Thanks all!

When I bought my 2004 Silverado in 2006, I was looking at both Dakota Quad cabs, and extended cab (cab and a half) Silverado/Sierras.

The reason why I was looking at quad cab Dakotas was that the extended cab version of the Dakota really didn't realistically have enough room in the back for real adults. Kids? Yes. Adults? No. However, the extended cab in the Silverado and Sierra did. I did anticipate occasionally carrying passengers in the truck.

A dealer let me drive a 2005 Dakota Quad Cab with the V6 for an entire weekend. I liked it well enough, it seemed to have enough power when empty and the 4 doors were nice. But how would it perform with 500 pounds of tools and materials in the bed, along with the added weight of a fiberglass topper?

However, the gas mileage with the 210 horsepower V6 Dakota (17 mpg combined) was literally the same as the Silverado that I ended up buying with a 295 horsepower 5.3 liter V8 (16 mpg combined). Ouch!

And, at that time, the price of the 2005 Dakota Quad Cab was nearly the same as the 2004 Silverado that I ended up buying.

As much as I wanted the Dakota (and it was the truck that I wanted to own), a full size truck was a better buy. Plus, I can do so much more with a full sized truck, including pulling my parents' 26' travel trailer. A V6 Dakota wouldn't have been able to do that.

Consumer Reports rates the Dakota as "worse than average".

Plus, the Dakota is a dead man walking at this point. The next model year is its last. That will have an impact on residual values after it is discontinued.

After I considered everything, as much as I wanted one, I didn't buy a Dakota.

They have atrocious gas mileage. Somehow the 2004 V6 Dakota a friend of ours owns gets worse mileage than our Expedition and weights several thousand pounds less, and makes much less power. Similar to mrsilv04's experience.

THEY ARE GREAT TRUCKS HAVE 04 QUAD CAB 4.7 4X4! IT PULLS WAY BETTER THAN THE 06 F150 MY DAD HAS

I assume your dad's F-150 does NOT have the 5.4L then.

Because that 235HP/295lb-ft 4.7L (with a MAXIMUM towing capacity of 6,600lbs) is not going to tow better than the 300HP/365lb-ft 5.4L in a truck with an 11,000lb towing capacity.

I'm not sure how an engine with a 65HP, and 70lb-ft power advantage is a "dog".

I know our Expedition would out-tow my buddy's '02 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7L. It wouldn't even be a contest.

what are you talking about? Ford is a GREAT company and comparing it to a 2 inch "peter" is just wrong.

OVER1KILL, as you always do, defend FoMoCo!

cheap flemsy unreliable junk! had an 09 f450 for 4 month as a company truck till power joke turbos went out back in 04 chevy with 160000 miles that has been trouble free

That is what a WARRENTY is for.

Why did they go out? Did they change the oil with cheap dino for 10,000 miles? Was it abused?

Let me ask you this... has that chevy been 100% trouble free?

as for Cheap flemsy unreliable junk, my 1993 F-150 w/ 5.0 302 has 81,000 trouble free miles.

my 1992 Lincoln towncar w/4.6 has 150,000 miles.

my 1990 Ford 7.3 w/ 165,000 miles couldn't be better.

whats going on?

never mind, we all have different tastes when it comes to company's.

However, don't compare ford to a "2in peter" again.
