2005 Silverado using some oil

I can't promise I'll do 4 oil changes with it but I'll try. 4 changes will take 20-25k miles. I plan to do them at 5k but sometimes dont get to it until close to 6K. Would be nice if it burned less oil at that time. I just don't know if i can spend that kind of money. I can't see how this stuff is so expensive. It must be all the marketing and expensive lawyers or something.

Again, the truck is great otherwise. I've had to do the normal stuff over the years like suspension, front end, wheel bearings, AC and parts of the exhaust. But its been really inexpensive to fix and my local corner mechanic does everything i can't or don't feel like doing now that im getting older. If the engine does get too tired, I'll put on some performance heads and maybe a cam to wake it up a bit. It's basically part of the family, so won't me going anywhere.

If it were mine I’d buy the absolute cheapest syn blend I could find, or maybe even conventional because with the age and miles and being the engine that it is, it doesn’t much matter what you use as long as it’s in there. I’d run my real cheap oil a 3k mile OCI and be good to go another 150-200k miles

Pcv valve?
A plugged up valve will use oul
Not sure if 2005 had the Olds design w/the ball or the or new design without the ball and just a hole
I had a 2002 4.8 and have a 2003 5.3 and a 2006 5.3

Truck most likely needs an updated valve cover with the revised PCV system. The first couple valve cover revisions were bad at just consuming oil.

I have a 2005 Suburban 1500 Z71 with the OE L59 (flex 5.3). Everything OE. 255k on the odometer. Thew a revised/last revision valve cover on it along with a catch can a few years ago. It’s lucky if it uses maybe a 1/5th of a quart over 3k miles. And the catch can collects maybe 2TBSP.

Don’t know if I’d figure it’s worn out already. The Gen 3s were some strong engines.
