2005 Silverado using some oil

I have a 2005 Silverado with the 4.8 V8. It has 265K miles and is using about 1.5 quarts every 5-6000 miles. I've been using Kirkland (Costco) 5 - 30 for the past 100-120K or so and oil use has been increasing. I used the high mileage kirkland oil a few times with no change.

Recommendations?

Valvoline Restore and Protect 5W-30 would be perfect.

When our 04 Tahoe started using oil I upped it to 10w30 super s high milage and the consumption stopped for all practical purposes

Yes. You’ve been buying one of the cheapest “synthetic” oils available. The Valvoline Restore and Protect will clean your piston ring lands in about 4 oci’s.

I remember when, at 100,000 mi. the engine was shot!
Anyway, IF we can attribute the oil usage to stuck/carbon filled, oil control rings, then Valvoline Restore and Protect is not only your best option, but likely your ONLY hope.

AND 1.5 qts/ 5-6000 miles is likely considered normal usage.

This is one of those situations where running the cheapest oil doesn’t really save you money in the long run. With the extra top up oil you have needed, combined with an engine that is likely not in peak condition and is getting worse fuel economy for a while, it would have been better to have spent even just a little bit more money each oil change ($5-10) and not put yourself in this predicament

I don't think I've ever spent that much on oil for a truck. But I sure do love the old thing. It is in great shape and i can not stomach the computer screens in my face in all the new trucks out there these days. You're right, it's not that much more per oil change, especially if it potentially can reverse the situation, which i certainly was not expecting to hear. Crazy how technolgy has advanced. I'm glad asked you all.

I don't believe with that kind of millage on the truck a different oil is going to make a substantial difference. Save your money.

I remember those days too. I think the late 90's- mid 00's are the best years for trucks. Reliable and tough with out all the technology. Anyway, this engine has been great. I did the water pump around 60K and the filter housing seal started leaking around 200K. Other than that, not even valve cover gaskets, timing chain or rear main seals. I do use only good gas (Sunoco or Mobil around me). Learned that lesson a few decades ago.

That consumption is ok. Have you updated the valve cover and changed the pcv hose which can get clogged.

You can try BG PN 109 prior to an oil change. That stopped the oil burning on my Honda with about the same mileage. The oil burning didn't bother me. Messing up the CATS from burning oil bothered me because New York has California emissions. Those CATS are expensive. But the stuff worked, unstuck the rings and the oil burning stopped, thankfully. A bad PCV valve can cause oil burning too. Don't know if you checked that out .

I have not looked into the PCV valve or valve cover. I did not think those were needed. I really just change the oil and put Cosmoline on her underside every few years. Will dig around and see what i find.

Sometimes the PCV hose gets soft and kinda sucks itself together, closing off the PCV system. If you haven't replaced the PCV valve in 265K, you are way overdue for a new one. They are cheap and normally located in the valve cover.

Yeah, an 05'. Things were simpler back then. That's why I'm running an 03', 06' Toyota Sedans with the 4 cylinder engine, and a 13' CRV with a 4 cylinder. Much more simpler to work on than newer cars. I'm too old to learn all this new techy stuff. New cars have like 40 or so computers in them now. Too much tech for me. Great for the younger generations though. They were brought up on techy stuff. I'll keep wrenching my old cars for as long as I can. Best of luck to you

My 23 year old son agrees with that! He picked up a really nice 02 Silverado a few months ago and loves it! He got it from the original owner and it’s got the 5.3 engine

I’m thinking the engine is worn out. It has 265,000 miles which probably puts it the top 5% of most vehicles for mileage. I fact, some data out there says only 1% make it that far.

Having said that, if the OP can spring for 4 OCI’s let’s see if the magical Restore and Protect can “loosen up the rings”. I don’t think this is due to using cheap Kirkland oil. If anything it’s evidence that you can make it to 265,000 miles on “ cheap Kirkland oil”.

But really, I hope the OP reports back to see if this oil consumption can be stopped.

With 280 million vehicles registered in the USA, 1% of them represents 2.8 million vehicles, so there is still a ton of stories of long lasting vehicles. I just took a ride in my neighbour’s 2008 Honda with 360,000 miles. 99% of vehicles don’t make it this far.
