Factory recommended OCI for my Boxster is 15k/1yr. I'm pretty sure the 1 yr OCI holds for the new 911, and not many will drive theirs anywhere near 20k/year.

Porsche's factory fill is M1 0W40. My Boxster's 2.7 holds 9 qts, I'm pretty sure this 911 holds more than 10 qts.

Just like the Boxster, I'm sure dealers will be sending out reminders (they don't really send coupons) to change oil every 7.5k miles. (BTW -- they charge around $150-180 for this 9qt oil and filter change. I did mine myself and the parts cost me around $60-65. Mahle filters are about $25 at the dealer, around $10-15 online. Good thing I only have to do this once a year.

On a related note, two typical oil topics on the Porsche boards goes something like this:

1. It's been a year and I only have driven 5k miles. Should I change my oil or can I leave it there for 2 years?

2. 0W40 oil is too thin for Vegas/So Cal, use 15W50. (Can you even imagine what these guys think of 0W20 oil?)

There was a great article earlier this year in the Excellence magazine that had a TSB from Porsche concerning oils. Porsche unlike most manufactures seems quite concerned with what is used in their cars. This TSB basically said that for all cars made after 1974, Porsche no longer recommends mineral oil. Porsche recommends Synthetic oils only and provided a list of oils. Interestingly, Porsche does approve of 10w-50 and 10w-60 for use in warm climates. So using a 15w-50 oil in hot climates in a Porsche (especially an air cooled one) is not unreasonable.

How do you know... Just buy one

Seriously, that car probably has a 10qt sump or something, and uses some really exotic oil (full ester, perhaps?)

Yes they do. But if they hold oil like the air cooled motor, they hold about 14 quarts. Also they use M1 0w-40 which is a top quality synthetic. Finally, check out the UOA of the Cayanne Turbo with 19,000 miles on its first oil change. While it is a different motor, the UOA was fine.

Currently Porsche has approved all ACEA A3 oils in 0w40. Also 5w40 and 5w50 if the temp is above -12F. There were some issues with cold 15w50 not flowing well enough for the variable valve lift mechanism. This is from a technical service bulletin dated 7/04.

I have a 2001 Porsche 996 Turbo. It is in Europe and there they specify 20,000 km. The same car in North America gets a 15,000 mile OCI.

If you drain the turbos and suck out the oil from the oil filter area you can get 8 litres out of it. But the true capacity is 12 litres. So yes, it has a high capacity but also it is impossible to change all of the oil in the car. certainly, there is still some of th original factory-fill oil in my car even after 90,000 km. This the same for all of the 996 dry-sump cars (GT2, GT3, Turbo).

As for viscocity, this is critical on the Turbo because of the vario-cam system. a 60 weight oil would be a big problem.
