Porsche 924 Turbo - oil choice?

I read this in Doug Hillary's 928 write up;

NOTE 4 - Contrary to common perception, changing oil more often than recommended has been shown to increase engine wear. An ongoing University of Michigan study has shown that the greatest wear occurs in the first 3000km of an oil’s life in any engine!

Gang, what does this mean? Are we doing a no-no? What does this mean?

From an oil chemist, I learned that ZDDP must oxidize (i.e. it's heat activated) before it is fully effective.

Hi James,
the thermostat is contained in the oil filter head. It restricts flow to the cooler
and I believe it is actually the 928 thermostat and this opens at 87C. On some engines the actuating spring can become weakened which restricts oil flow and causes very high oil temperatures

Use a IR reader to see if it is working or simple do a "feel" check to see if warm oil is flowing into the cooler on a cold start!

Oil coolers without a thermostat can be very counterproductive to engine performance and durability

Your car sounds great - enjoy it

Regards
Doug

Thanks Doug, I will check it. On another note, we decided NOT to use Auto-RX in my wife's 150K mile Saturn DOHC, instead doing a couple of regular OCI's with dino Delvac HDEO, and finally a "rinse" of about 700 miles with Shell dino. Next in will be Royal Purple 10w-30 and a 2300-mile road trip to Colorado. We'll do a 5K OCI with UOA and see how she's doing, and make a decision on whether or not to keep the car :-)

Happy Motoring,

Yes, we have done 3 or 4 OCI's at 3K miles with the "new" Delvac HDEO, and now the Shell. Before we leave on our trip next week I will put in the RP. I thought about doing the Auto-RX cycle on the way out, and rinse phase on the return trip, but I don't think I could get a bottle that quickly, nor try to fit in an oil change at my buddy's wedding in Highlands Ranch. Beats waiting a couple of months-- instant gratification!

UPDATE-- 931 is running great, just got back from The Black Forest shop in San Diego, tuned the CIS with an EGA and found the car to be waaaay lean, good thing I have been going easy on the car! Adjusted timing and mixture, car starts and runs smooooooth with a big decrease in emissions as well. Still won't rev beyond 4300rpm under load, we'll be inspecting the catalytic converter next.

Back to the Oil, not sure if that will have an effect on the UOA on this Royal Purple. I may have to do two back-to-back with the same oil, although we are still very early into this OCI.

Thanks,

JamesW

UPDATE-

Still on Royal Purple 15w-40 HDEO and K&N oil filter, at 2K miles still absolutely NO oil consumption. There is an oil/air separator that gets a little vapor coming into the intake track, but I see no measurable loss of oil on the dipstick. Even for an oil-cooled turbo (no water lines) the oil still doesn't look very dark, and really have no complaints with valve tick. My new 3" exhaust and catalytic converter are performing great, and the ne exhaust pipe isn't even darkened after 700 miles of driving...no smoke!

OCI at 3K miles is the plan, what it go with next??
