Since I didn't get an owner's manual with the truck and the Search function here is more or less useless, I decided to start a thread about this truck/engine.

Is the good ole standard 5W30 the thing to use?

Could I use 5W20 Syn?

Find out what is recommended. If it's 5w30 I don't think you can go wrong with that oil. I know some gm cars are calling for 5w20 but the bigger motors I am not sure.

As with most Vortec V8 modular engines, they like oil a little on the "thick" side. My experience with the 5.3, 6.0 and 8.1 is to go with a 10-30. Here in GA you can run it year-round. I've had great luck with Pennzoil Platinum 10-30 in my Sierra. GC is also an excellent choice but that stuff's gone. I would not run a 5-20 in it, too much piston slap and cold start knock.

Thanks for all the replies. I'll stick with 5W30, either with Motorcraft or Pennzoil Plat.

I gots to get me a Manual.

I am running a mix of 1/2 Mobil1 5w30 and 1/2 Mobil1 10w30 in my 6.0L Vortec and it loves it. Cut out all the cold start knock and no decrease in MPG.
