That's not a bad price for factory quality. My very elderly mother had her 2008 Prius battery replaced at a VT dealership. She paid over $4000. I told her that $4K purchases a lot of gas. She's had an MPG obsession since 1974 and she feels the Prius was "heaven sent" just for her! She loves it with a passion. Unfortunately, something else in the hybrid system failed and now the $4K battery does nothing. The engine just drones at high RPM all the time and she puts up with it.

Quite simply, I'm not convinced a Prius saves any money, or resources over it's lifespan (mostly due to expensive battery replacement) . Although it's pretty clear that hybrid drive gets the best MPG and may be the most efficient in overall operation. Even beating out pure EV's in "fuel consumed per mile driven" when EV's are powered by fuel burning plants.
