Ive been to jaglovers and they had great information for my 2000 xj, but not so much activity on the newer one.

Its not black atm, just a dark brown. what went in was a light golden color penzoil platinum.

I really wish I can buy one of these cars new and start from there, but unfortunately I cant buy $70-80k cars.

After posting here, and rereading my other thread I feel much better about taking it longer. The filter Im using is puralator pureone(the on on the car now is made in germany)... They seem to be better constructed then the stock ones which I think are frams ?

whats your take on puralator filters ? stp's are junk btw

Filters are Filters, rebadged 3 Times.

My parts store has STP and i use it.

See thread about "How Important is a Filter"

I was getting a chain rattle with the STP filter, 2 of them. They fit onto the Jag but I dont think their antidrain back valves work the way they are supposed to on the specific one. I dont get it with the puralator and Ive used 2 of them so far.

Gene K, Thanks for the reply
Ive read the manual many times, but it doesnt tell me how capable penzoil platinum of lubricating, cooling, protecting the motor with said soot/particles in it.

It specifies a broad range of oil weights, 5w30 10w30 40's all sorts of stuff. I Have 5w30 in it now, I should have gottong a thicker oil for the summer.

as for oil it specifies regular dino, Jaguar recommends castrol motor oil. The AJ V8 isnt a ford motor per se, and the XJ doesnt share a chasis with any for, or componants for that matter.

This batch of Oil Im just going to ride out to 85k. The way I see it is that 1)its a full synthetic 2) after 1500miles I added a fresh 3/4 qt 3) between 81k and 82k its going to get a new filter and another fresh 1qt+ oil. So I should be protected , and this batch of oil can pick up most of the deposits.

Like I said Im sure even with no topup the oil is more then good for 7500miles. OEM specifies dino for 10k.

I just dont want my oil to turn this color so soon

and if I change it I dont want the new one to turn this color so soon. So Ill just let this batch take all that in so my new oil cant last longer.

make sense ? IDK its late on my end hehe

The manual on mine is pretty non-specific.

Between - 22F and +122F, it requires API SJ/ILSAC GF-3 as a base, and viscosities of 0w-30, 5w-30 (preferred), 0w-40, and 5w-40 may be used.

The use of the word "may" obviously implies that under the right circumstances, other viscosities may be allowed.

There are no other special requirements or specifications, at least as is listed in my manual, and the spec is the same for supercharged and normally aspirated engines. Synthetic is never mentioned.

This information is found on page 178 of the 2004 XJ Driver's Handbook.

I thought I've heard a chain rattle a time or two on my wife's AJ-V8, but it sits for weeks at a time without being driven. I may try a Purolator next time around.

yes it was doing it when the car would sit overnight at cold startup in the morning. It wasnt even too cold out but still did it, now I dont have that problem and I dont remember it doing it with the jaguar filter.

I think I may switch over to german castrol at 85k, win youve been around longer than I have... know of any instances where this oil has been used on our motor ?

I really don't keep up much with the euro oil forum, I'm sure the GC would be fine, as would the Mobil 1 Ow-40.

The dealers just put plain GTX in them, the manuf. recommendation is pretty broad, so I think you can pretty safely use whatever modern oil suits your fancy.

That puts the fun into it, doesn't it?

yes fun lols, well I thought about it some more and in a months or so Im going to order a new transmission pan. I've done quite alot of short OCI on the transmission since I purchased the car. Now that only new oil comes out on the drain Im due to change the pan.

at that time I will change the motor oil also, using a 0w40 whether is PP or Mobil1. Im not sure that Wal-Mart* carries the GC.

The way the mileage is looking I should be at or around 80k miles. Then which ever oil I use I will think about whether to due 5k OCIs or 10k OCIs..

will anyone local want my drained PP with 3500miles ? Ill pm you when I change it.

so I bought Mobil1 15w50 "race" oil for the Jaguar... With the weather so hot and humid lately it seems like the motor and everything around it is VERY hot. My coolant was flushed twice last summer, and the temperature readout is normal, so it seems the car is just running very hot. This oil should help me out some in both protection and heat reduction correct ?

Is this the 4.0L AJ V8 engine? If so I always found it interesting that the same engine (but called a 3.9L so the Jag guys could say their was bigger) was used on the Lincoln LS and 02-05 Thunderbird but called for 5W20 instead of xW30 as called for in the Jag. Also, the OCI is far less in the LS and Thunderbird. Always wondered if the V8s in the LS and Thunderbird would be happier with xW30.

This is the 4.2l AJ V8, and its my understanding that the lincoln motor and these are different motors. I think the only parts they share are the chain tensioners...

But the AJ family is all essentially one motor so to speak. Ford specifies the 5w20 in almost all theirs motor IIRC and IDK much about them.

But any help on my 15w50 question will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.
