2004 Honda Pilot

I am new to this forum and looking for some direction from the pros here.

I have a 2004 Honda Pilot with 62,000 miles on it. I recently changed the oil with a supertech filter and Mobil 1 5W20 fully synthetic oil (Guaranteed for 15K OCI).

This is the first time I have used synthetic oil and I was wondering how many miles I should run it before changing it. When using conventional oil Honda recommends changing the oil every 7500 miles.

This vehicle is driven about 70% in town and 30% on highway. It gets really warm (80-100) here in Socal during the summer but the car is not driven hard.

I would appreciate any thoughts, ideas or recommendations.

I would rec. getting a used oil analysis around 10k and see what's its like. Main reason being is that you are driving 70% in town and tha's a lot harder on the engine.

I am saying 10k assuming that 7500 miles on dino has been working fairly well for you.

My friend uses the identical setup for his 04Pilot and he goes 12K with a 1/2 quart top off at 7.5K. He had UOA and seemed to fine. He lost his UOA otherwise I'd tell him to post it here. He has over 125K.

You didn't say how fast you put miles on.If you are looking for the longest time period you can run, 1 year is fine up to 10k 12k is the max I'd go. If you drive less miles in a year, still dump it at the 1 year mark. If you drive more, you might want to go with 6 month changes on a cheaper oil.

I prefer timed intervals, so 1-2 times a year is the minimum. Usually I do 3-4 times a year, just because I have a stash and like doing the task.

Two questions: First, did you buy the car new (such that the wty is now expired), or did you get it used (and/or with an extended wty)? We bought both the Prius and the Camry used, and they came with the TCU 7/100 wty -- better than new. Your wty status may well drive the answer to this question.

I used to prefer times intervals. When I went back to law school at age 30, I had to cut EVERYTHING back. I just went to changing before the start of each semester (which nicely worked out to 5-6k mile OCIs).

Bottom line: each of us has to thoughtfully examine and analyze their own operating conditions and challenges.
