I'm a new member, and I think my wife suspects I'm surfing porn sites with all the time I'm spending on BITOG! You folks are an incredible resource. I have an Acura TSX 4 cylinder 6 spd just turning 102,000 and have decided to do my own OC's. 5W-30 recommended (and always thought W stood for weight *G*) and the car averages less than 6K yearly and no oil leaks. Is a high mileage oil recommended, and should I use a synthetic or conventional? Planning on using the OEM Honda filter. Thank you in advance!

Welcome!!

What has been used oil wise prior? Considering less than 6k a year, you could run a syn and do a once a year OCI. If you arent leaking or burning anything now, you can try syn. Or stick with a good conventional. I think both should handle a once per year oil change. Id recommend Mobil 0w30 and Honda filter.

My wife drives a 2010 with 50K and I change with either 0W-20 or 5W-20 Synthetic ( 5W-20 recommended by Acura ) following the MM which goes to 0% around 10K miles. I would use synthetic oil and extend the oil change to about 6K or once a year.

Honda OEM oil filter is okay but there are better aftermarket oil filters, 1 of the best is Fram Ultra UG7317 at reasonable price of less than $10 at Walmart. Pep Boys has it at $10 but you can get some discount code once in a while for anywhere from 20% to 35% off.

For oil, any name brand conventional 5W30(on sale) will be able to do 1 year/6k oil change, and keep Fram Ultra for 2 oil changes. No need for high mileage oil because your TSX doesn't leak/consume oil.

Fellow TSX 1ST GEN owner here, 05 117k 5at (wife's car)

Previous owner took the car to random oil change places, including the Acura dealer here and there. Dealer invoice showed 5w20 was put in, although the car was never back specced like other Hondas.

I've been running whatever name brand 5w30 that's been on sale. Every uoa I've looked at for the k24 motor shows little wear and great results for any oil. The first two oil changes were uneventful, but we recently moved onto a hill and I've noticed a slight oil burn (1/2 at in 5k miles) during the latest oci. I switched to Valvoline next gen maxlife as a precaution. The early 04 models are known to burn oil,so keep an eye on your oil level.

Hi Jon81,

Welcome, over here we call that car the Honda Accord Euro. It's fully imported, same engine (2.4L in-line 4 cyl., K24). It's a very popular car. I really like their look.

Most people here, with that car, would run a 5W-30 full Synthetic or a 10W-30 SN mineral or Semi-synthetic. Choice is yours. I would lean towards the full or semi-synthetic myself.

So, when your wife found out you were on BITOG all this time, was she happy or disappointed ? I ask in a nice way, I'm not allowed to talk about oils at home any more….

Hi, fellow 1st gen tsx owner here.. 06 5at 120k miles now. I have run GC ow30 before, but switched to pennzoil platinum pp and pennzoil ultra pp 5w-30. Car feels it revs easier and quicker on the pennzoil than the GC.

Another TSX owner here. Bought mine with 10k miles on it 7 years ago. I've put 180k miles on it since. I've run PP and PU for most of those miles, changing the oil when the dashboard told me to. The valvetrain is spotless and the car runs great.

Engine is like band new after 180k miles.

I think Honda(Acura) recommended conventional oil for this engine and the use of synthetic with the same OCI did wonder.

Welcome, since the car is not driven very much (6K a year), use any synthetic.

Me personally I would use Mobil 1 5W-30 Extended Performance with a Fram Ultra filter and change once a year.

The 'W' in 5W-30 stands for Winter.

FWIW, the valvetrain is noisier in my TSX when running Mobil1. I ran it a few times and ended up settling on the Pennzoil offerings as the valvetrain was quieter with it. The Mobil1 oil you mention is a fine oil and the engine will run beautifully with it, but it may be a touch louder.

when I still had my 2007 TSX, I used Pennzoil 5W20 yellow bottle, change every 5000mi.

Car ran really great, excellent MPG....traded it in for my Accord right before it hit 100K.

Hey jon81SC - Welcome to the BITOG community! Since you're considering making the switch to a synthetic motor oil, we wanted to let you know we’re currently looking for consumers who are willing to test out making the switch to Pennzoil Synthetics. We would like to give you the opportunity to try out our latest full synthetic offerings and get some results/feedback on the oil’s performance from an independent testing facility. Please send us a private message if you are interested in participating! - The Pennzoil Team

Folks,

Thank you all for your prompt replies!

Rolla - the Pennzoil Synth was 1 of the 3 I am considering. Why do you recommend the 0W-30 v. the mfr. recommended 5W-30?

MEZ - the '04 Acura recommendation is 5-30. I'm old school and "when all else fails, read the directions".

HTSS - this is the 1st time I've ever heard Fram recommended! And appreciate your comment re: the HM not necessary.

Z - thank you for the heads up on the '04 burning oil. Interesting that hasn't been brought to my attention from the dealer doing my OC's. Maybe I'm just lucky.

SRS - planning on using the full synth since probably only changing 1x @ year. RE: my wife - think she would rather it was porn. I'm boring her to sh*t w/ all the new oil info I'm sharing.

SI & Paynes - great to hear the Pennzoil results - that's 1 of 3 I'm considering. I can only hope my engine looks that clean!

STCH - is the Fram you're recommending the Ultra UG7317 that HTTS recommends?

Running oil and filter in my signature in my '05 TSX. I have oil consumption of 1 quart per 3,000 miles, so I'm hoping the MaxLife synthetic will calm it down.

I plan to use the Fram Ultra filter for two 7,500 mile OCIs and add oil as needed.

How many miles does your TSX have?

I hear you Jon81SC,

I am no longer allowed to tell my wife about my latest oil discovery. She doesn't care about NOACK, HTHS or TBN !!! Can you believe it ??

I had to smuggle my last oil purchase in, as my wife thinks we already have enough oil in the house. She is probably right, but it was a bargain …… so how could I walk past it.

BTW Full Synthetic 5W30 is a good choice. Any name brand will be good. It's not a GM car, but DEXOS rated oils are quite good and should do a nice job.

Hard to go past free synthetic oil and testing from Pennzoil / Gena.

I have to agree it is hard to pass up free oil and a test to boot! Pennzoil's offerings are very good. The K24 won't mind one bit.

Some of those early TSX's had a severe drinking problem mine was using a quart about every 1500 miles the dealer claimed it was normal. Sold it after only a year. Fast forward 10 years, back in another k24 that still gets 30 weight and doesn't use any oil between changes.
