2004 Accord in NC another 5w20 Question

I’ve got a 2004 Honda Accord. As you all know, Honda specifies 5w20 for this vehicle. I am a salesman and drive about 3,500 miles per month. I have been using Mobil 1 since the vehicle was new; it now has 80K on it. I am going to switch to conventional motor oil and am curious as to the best brand. It seems Havoline has a big following here. I see from this forum that the 5w20 debate rages on, but I’m wondering is 5w30 wouldn’t be better. It’s 97 here in NC today.

Mobil 1 5w20/30 and a 3-4 month OCI sounds better than Havoline at 5-7k OCI.

I agree with extending the UOA rather than using the cheaper dino. I do 10,000 on regular M1 on my accord. That would be three months for you. If that is too often go to the Mobil 1 Extended Performance and go 6 months. Just my 2Cents worth. I think either the 5w-20 or 5w30 would be fine here in North Carolina.

I would stop using Mobil 1 and try Mobil 1. That Mobil 1 might be a cheap knock off. Just messing with you. I agree with going the longer oil change route. Maybe even consider amsoil. Amsoil seems to be made for applications like this. But to really answer your original question I think havoline would be a good way to go or Motorcraft.

With your circumstances, you'd really be time and money ahead by using good synthetics and changing the oil less frequently.
And you'd suffer no loss of engine protection.

Mobil 5000 5w30 over two month oil change intervals will work just fine. Highway miles are easy miles. Honda motor oil by the quart at Honda dealerships is made by ExxonMobil. (If I'm not mistaken, Honda recommended 10,000 mile oil change intervals for the '04 Accords - regardless of type of oil. That's a bit excessive in my book, but check your owner's manual for verification.)

That sounds like 42,000 miles per year! You sound like a good candidate for 4x per year or app 10,000 per OCI as a minimum.

If it were mine, I would continue to use Mobil 1 0w20,5w20. But as you probably know (my Honda Civic anyway) the oem recommendation is 10,000 miles OCI but with CONVENTIONAL oil. So I would have no qualms in doing 15,000 to 20,000 mile OCI's or 3/2 OCI's per year.

I went 10K on Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 on my 02 V6 Accord with 113K on the clock and had a used oil analysis on it. Oil could have gone 13K, easily. With that in mind, I'd suggest you do the same thing. Why go with 5 to 7K dino's when a 13K proven Mobil 1 Extended Performance will hold up longer. Cost wise, should just about even out when you consider new filter at 5 to 7K also. Plus, your getting a piece of mind that you got one of the most highly touted oils in there for those "just in case" situations.

We have been running Pennzoil 5W-20 for almost 40K miles in our 02 Accord V6, 75% highway miles, almost 70K miles on the car now. 5-8,000 mile intervals. No problems in the summer heat here. Would agree with mechtech and 427Z06 about going with synthetic at manuf. reco. intervals. I believe Terry Dyson is running Pennzoil Platinum in his; M1 has worked well for many.

I would use Synthetics @ approx. 3 months intervals. Mobil 1 0w20, Mobil 1 5w20 or Pennzoil Platinum 5/20. Your mileage makes you a perfect candidate to benefit from synthetics. The 20 weights will do fine in the heat and save you a little on gas too.

For short OCI's intervals any (not just Havoline) oil would work just fine.
5w20 and 5w30?
If you're of a cautious type, then use 5w30, and sleep well at night.
