2003 Tundra 75w140

[FL-400S]

On a whim I am going to change out the gear oil on my 03 tundra 3.4L 2wd. It specs 4qt synthetic 75w140. It has 53k miles. I changed it once already to Redline at around 2-3 years old and probably under 20k miles. I have to run out and buy the gear oil today. Locally available it looks like my choices are Supertech, Valvoline synpower, and for a $$$ premium, M1 and Royal Purple. Seems each store may only carry 2 types of 75w140.

It may help if the same store carries lubegard red for a different vehicle.

I'm leaning towards synpower. Thoughts / suggeestions?

With less than 20k miles on the gear oil, it's almost like new!

I have purchased the M1 75w140 several times with the buy online, pickup in-store coupon codes at Advance Auto Parts. It brought the cost down significantly.

If you changed at 20k and are at 53k with redline you have another 20-40,000 miles to go.

I was thinking more like its been a long time...8+ years.

Oil can't tell time. Unless it has water contamination (very unlikely unless it has been dunked), the oil remains excellent.

No the truck never sees boat ramps or anything. Towed maybe 2000 miles in that time. I generally change engine oil yearly if not driven often. Gear oil changed strictly by mileage?



Anyways, I found a discount code and got 4 qts of M1 75w140 for about $53 at advance. Was easy to open the fill and drain plugs. The redline had a sour smell. The magnet plug had a fair amount of shavings, and there seemed to be a fair amount of shavings in the oil. I dont do burnouts or drive it rough. I would have thought the break-in shavings would have been out by now. A gallon of gear oil is a lot. I know the titans had problems maybe due to only having a few pints of oil.
