2003 Toyota Echo with increasing oil consumption

So, he uses a low technology break in oil with few detergents, no VIIs, no friction modifiers, and lots of cheap ZDDP and charges $15 a quart for it.

That's exactly what he recommends to seat the rings and protect the cams for first 500 miles. It doesn't need to last 25000 miles. And, he charges cost only which is a lot cheaper than $15. That's how much he believes in it.

But, back to my curiosity. How would Chevron do at breaking in rings? Thanks!

I wasn't criticizing the mechanic; I was criticizing Joe Gibbs, because the stuff tends to be pricey.

In any case, if one is following the logic used for a break-in oil, a Chevron ILSAC rated oil follows a completely different philosophy, being a low phosphorus, highly friction modified oil.

Im thankful to see you have knowledge on Toyota engines and would like to pick your brain. Ive been searching for info on our Toyoya 2az-fe I repair striped head bolts with time serts and the head surfaced and new guides by machine shop. I was becoming aware of oil consumption prior to the motor work. With 650 miles since the top-end rebuild, oil is down 1/2-3/4qt. filled with Mobil1 full synthentic 5w-30. I know this engine has oil consumption problems and Toyota is sometimes stepping up on repairs but it seems that highlanders are excluded and were are over 150k miles. The wife is now driving 0.7 miles to and from work each day, so the motor isn't even warm at this point. Not sure how this short driving will effect consumtion, but I'd like to hear your thoughts on anything I can do to reduce oil consumption and prolong it's life. BTW the inside had very little, if any sludge and and a thin amber coating on interior surfaces and minor buildup on oil pan.

At 1.4miles per day I'd think it was severe duty, and would change the oil very often. I also wouldn't care about some oil usage, as it'll last close enough to forever to not care. Does not sound like it is being driven that many miles per year.

How old is this motor now, and how many miles?

FWIW, my parents have a 1NZ-FXE in their Prius with nearly half the miles and I run either PP or M1 5W-30 in it with 5K OCIs, and for some reason XOM oils are consumed much quicker than SOPUS oils. I haven't tried M1HM or PPHM in it yet.

Simply impossible.

Oil consumption only depends on viscosity, NOACK, and operating conditions. It doesn't depend on oil brand. Given that these oils have similar viscosity and NOACK, oil consumption should be virtually identical with them unless operating conditions differ.

Therefore, it's merely experimental error (different amounts of oil put in, different operating conditions, different mileage, etc., etc.).

In Montana during winter? Not a good idea...

5w-30 Pennzoil High Mileage with active cleansing agents and add 1 quart of Rislone to help unstick/unclog the oil control rings.

With 340K mi and only using a quart in aprox 2.5K mi it doesn't have stuck/clogged oil rings, basically it's wearing out...

When it's using a quart in 1000 mi, then you have a problem... But still that solves the issue of OCI, add and keep going...
