Yet another Mazda6 UOA. Aren't you guys lovin these? The whole community is addicted to them.

This oil was run 7019 miles in the spring/summer, around 70% highway driving, in mid-texas area.

Drag raced once on the oil (7 runs), and the owner is an aggressive driver.

Modifications include an Injen Cold Air Intake (Cotton Gauze Filter), and a Magnaflow Exhaust.

As always, other Mazda 6 UOA's available for comparison @

This guy has guts I'll say that. I wouldn't jump right to a 7,000 mile OCI on a vehicle with only 3,000 miles. Then again I'm a wimp....I can't bring myself to exceed 5,000 miles for an OCI.

Very soon I'll be sending in a sample of Havoline dino 5w-20 from my 6i. It will only have 3,000 miles on it but it was run very hard (WOT and constant redlines for a good 2 hours of track time). I'm almost scared at what I'll see.

Hey Joe,

Standard interval is 7500 miles. Severe Interval (which includes stopngo) is 5000 miles.

Between 03 and 04, the sump size of the 6s was increased from 5.5 qts to 6.0 qts, which may be due to the extended OCI.

TBN's usually fall around the 3-2.5 point around 7000-7500 miles depending on oil choice.

I myself run 5000 OCI's with syn, as I routinely race my car.

Thanks Crossbow, I was just curious. I have owned a couple of Mazdas the last couple of years(a 96 Mazda 626 V6 and a 2000 Mazda B3000) and they both had the 3-5K mile OCIs listed. Glad to see they extended it, Joe

FYI - the Mazda B3000 is a Ford Ranger in disguise - so follow Ford specs for that.

The 626 engines were probably not made to the same tolerances as the 6i and 6s engines, and as a result, a higher viscosity oil is recommended for those cars, than the 6's engines. We use 0W20 as a suitable substitute for the factory recommended 5W20. And the 626 and Protegea have a recommendation of 10W30. You know better than I, how to interpret that data and its (implied) impact on 'safe' OCIs for equivalent usage - so I'll leave the information there, and not try to analyze it

I never extended my dino OCIs on my 95 Protege beyond 3500 miles, but neither did I ever perform a UOA!

Back to topic - on the posted UOA, doesn't the viscosity scare anyone? How should that be interpretedRight off, with my meager and growing understanding of UOA and their analyses - I'd say 7K miles on a new-ish car engine is a terrible, terrible idea. Or am I exaggerating that?

CrossBow, how do the per 1000 mile numbers (for Fe, Si, Cu etc) compare to your and other 6s engine UOAs with shorter OCIs and M1 SS 0W20? IIRC, yours were better!

I wouldn't do 7K on a new car, nor would I "Drag raced once on the oil (7 runs), and the owner is an aggressive driver.", but apparently no damage!

No, not scared, 70 is barely into SAE 40 territory (Blackstone's range numbers are wrong, I always wonder how soon before they will change them...)
