Crossbow,

The Mazda6Tech site is very nice. I lurk alot there as my wife has a 2000 626 and my daughter has a 2003 Protege that I am helping maintain.

As far as the analysis, the numbers look very good on this oil. I will let the others dissect that part.

Ahh - thanks for posting that for me!

Yeah - another good UOA, another wasted $20!

And this was arguably the hardest driven interval yet. A lot more redlining than ever before, hard highway and city miles (my commute is mostly highway, 30 miles daily - so that's good).

I did have a question for the folks at Blackstone, which they ignored, so I'll reiterate it here ... first some background
  • Oil sump + cartridge volume on 6i is 4.5 quarts
  • I mistakenly added only 4.35 quarts (found bottle had 0.65+ quarts remaining when I filled up last weekend)
  • I also have a tiny leak in the drain plug, which has an integrated washer (over tightened at factory and by garage mechanic at first oil change - thereafter a constant oily dampness under pan every oil change, and some drippage onto the plastic under-engine cover - but very little - 12 inches by 12 inches square area has greasy/oily dampness)

Now for the question - I recovered only around 3.8-3.9 quarts of oil, plus the little wastage involved with the braindead (Ford-style) plastic cartridge oil system the 6i uses. I'll be switching to a nicer filter system - with parts from the Mazda 3i, soon!)

Meantime, should I be concerned about oil drippage, or is there any oil burning going on? I can't tell about oil burning from looking at the UOA - don't quite know what to look for! Does the reduction in oil (4.35 quarts to 3.85, plus some wastage/drippage/untidyness) sound reasonable and entirely attributable to the drippy drain plug?

Yes, I know - I should change the drain plug or get a nice Fumoto valve - by next oil change I promise.

In the meantime, your expert interpretations would be much appreciated

I have a 2004 Mazda6s with the V6 3k miles so far.I am also going to switch to m1 0w20 when i hit 6k. I hope my UOA comes out as good as the other 6i. The only diff.is my oil filter is a standard fit,no cartridge needed for this engine.

Eric,

There are tons of 6s UOA's at the UOA below the one posted above...or just do a search for Mazda 6 in the UOA section. Either way you'll see we have about 15 UOA's with various oils

Thanks crossbow. I read all the UOA's and the only thing I was worried about is being in FL and how the M1 Ow20 would handle the year round heat.

Thanks! Any further comments regarding ...
1. Iron content. Does it track miles that much? Shouldn't I see it drop? (I know - its still lower than many other cars)
2. My long thesis about recovering les oil than I put in - 3rd post above ( Upon looking around the forum, slight oil consumption, at such low levels, shouldn't really be a concern. Am I over-reacting?

3. The drop in Molybdenum (additive?) levels? Does that also track with miles?
