The last generation S-Cars went to a plastic intake. Some of the single overhead cam motors would have a leaking intake gasket. High idle is one symptom. Not sure if it still applied to your year. If you are new to Saturns, go to Saturnfans. Just about everything you want to know about these cars are there. Here is a nice overview of the S-Car:

Saturn Checklist

This should get great gas mileage. Properly tuned with the parts that work best on these engines 40 mpg or so on highway. All the info for that is at Saturnfans.

I have a 99 SL2 with 210,000 miles. I would buy another if this one needs to be replaced.

It seems like almost anything branded Saturn that has a 4-cylinder engine will run FOREVER.

AND they do their part to help control the mosquito population.

At that mileage oil consumption may be minimal. Mine increased with higher miles.

I use 1 quart per 1,000 miles. I used to have a big cloud of smoke when accelerating hard until this year. I installed a fixed orifice PCV valve. It was the best upgrade and cheap ($2.99 plus tax at AutoZone).

Ultimate PCV for Saturn

This looks like one of those rare nice cars at a beater price.
I doubt you'll find anything as nice for the money.
If you can use a general purpose beat around car, this would certainly be one to buy, aside from the obvious fuel economy and cheap parts availability advantages of a Saturn.
